With our plans to attend New York Fashion Week on hold, we did the next best thing and tuned in online to take in the Spring 2021 collections. With COVID-19 completely disrupting how brands planned to showcase this season, it was incredible to see the creativity and adaptability from designers and their teams to give their collections a worthy presentation. From socially distanced to audience-less shows, we’ve rounded up three of our favourite collections, watched from the comfort of home. —Lyndi Barrett
jason wu. Designer Jason Wu created the tropical escape we all crave right now. Showcased on the rooftop of Spring Studios, an oasis of plants and towering beach trees created a botanical background to showcase Spring 2021. A small audience was seated in a social-distanced setting that was reminiscent of a beach scene with glimpses of the cityscape in the background. Inspired by trips to his home-away-from-home, Tulum, a more relaxed look was presented by Wu. This was the first time he showed a more casual contemporary line on the runway, which felt right for the moment. Bright-hued dresses and suiting in relaxed fits were styled with beach hats, and Velcro sandals by Arizona Love. Jason Wu’s Spring 2021 collection made us really hope we can have a proper beach vacation next year!
ulla johnson. For her show, Johnson presented her collection in a live setting, but without an audience. The runway was set up on the rooftop of the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, with the iconic New York skyline on the horizon. This created a very serene setting to showcase Spring 2021.Inspired by scenes of Japan, Johnson looked to ceremonial dress, shibori printing, and origami-like pleating. This lent a lot of structure to the collection, juxtaposed with the designer’s signature feminine fabrics. There is always an ease to an Ulla Johnson’s pieces, and this was evident in the soft structured silhouettes, big sleeves and strong shoulders. Also, the brand just launched a line of handbags, which are handwoven in Italy and created from raffia, wicker and calf leather, finished with braided macrame handles. There is also a collection of cute everyday baskets, including a champagne carrier. After this year, it will make the perfect present!
christian siriano. For collection 37, Siriano let his imagination run free and found inspiration in everything that was right in front of him while quarantining at home. Watching his favourite films from childhood, like Troop Beverly Hills, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitte’s Dead, Clueless and The Wizard of Oz, provided the perfect jumping-off point for this season. On the day of the show, guests were whisked away to Siriano’s home in Westport, Connecticut, to sit in a social-distanced setting and take in the beautiful collection. Canadian model Coco Rocha, pregnant with her third child, closed the show, stepping into the pool for the grand finale in a red body-con gown for an unplanned whimsical moment. This unexpected ending to a spectacular presentation was a reminder that even in the midst of a pandemic, we all still need to have fun.
