We asked five local guys to share their idea of a perfect Valentine’s Day date (brunch at Farmer’s Apprentice, the ski-princess treatment in Whistler, spicy noodles on the beach; excuse us, we’re flustered). We’d take any of them home to our moms. Read on, and decide who your bachelor number 1 is.

For me, it all starts with flowers. As a florist, I’m clearly a little biased, but I think the classic Valentine’s gift is a classic for good reason. As for the perfect date—I’m all for shared experiences over grand gestures. A quick flight to a secluded property on Vancouver Island would be perfect. For me, nothing is more romantic than getting away from it all with that special someone. Just add champagne.

The Farmer’s Apprentice is a go-to for brunch. Follow it with a walk around the corner to Beaucoup Bakery for something sweet. Granville Island is just down the road along Fir Street. We’d walk down to pick out ingredients for dinner together later that evening. The walk from Granville Island to Olympic Village is underrated and mostly unexplored (unless you live in the area); False Creek South has some amazing views of the city. From there we’d go home to prep dinner together. While dinner’s getting ready, we’d play a game. I like backgammon, but also really excited for Exploding Kittens.

Spontaneity creates the best memories. Heads or tails … let’s let fate decide. We’ll meet at Matchstick Coffee, heads for americanos, tails for lattes. From there, if we’re feeling a little hungry, heads we pick up food at the local deli and head to the Spanish Banks for a picnic by the water, tails we head to Guilt & Co. for dinner and live music. Either way, there’ll never be a dull moment.

In Whistler, a date can take all day—there’s just so much to do! Let’s meet at Elements Cafe for brunch (bring your ski gear because after brunch we’re hitting the slopes). After spending the afternoon skiing some of the best secret spots on Whistler, we’ll drop into Seppo’s Bar at the top of the mountain for what I like to call "reverse apres." We’ll enjoy a little mountaintop cocktail, then ski down as the sun dips below the horizon. From the hill, we’ll cruise over to Scandinave Spa for a nice relaxing soak in the outdoor pools. Finally, we’ll hit the Bearfoot Bistro for dinner and a tour of their world-famous vodka room.

We’ll wake up early and drive around the city to see if we can find street signs that share names with our favourite people. Then we’ll take a walk in the woods, figuring it must be fate, because we both like insects and we both have tattoos of moths on our arms. We’ll decide that "Little Miss Ginger Cinnamon Biscuit Cutie Face" is a great name for our first kitten, and that my idea to name our first dog Barbara is just no good at all. We’ll finish the day sitting on the beach, eating spicy noodles in to-go boxes and talking about just how tiny we felt before we met and how much bigger life can feel in a day.
