We love a good candle—for relaxing, for setting the mood … and let’s not forget that flattering flickering light! We’ve sought out small-scale Canadian candle makers that light up our lives and fuel our love of all things locally made. These are our top picks for emerging brands that are totally lit. —Jeanine Gordon
Celebrating the female form, YVR Candles are a hot way to add fiery femininity to any room. We love the Harmonia candle ($34)—hand-poured using natural soy wax. These sensual beauties are unscented, making the perfect pick for everyday use. Choose from a rainbow of hues made from natural dyes and burn baby burn.
Pure + Wild Co. put a proud Canadian twist on their coconut-soy wax candles—inspired by the Canadian wilderness with scents named for Banff, Skookumchuck, Okanagan and other beloved local nature destinations. We love the Sunshine Coast candle ($32) as a nod to where they’re made and for its fragrant combination of wild BC fir, honey, orange, tamarind and clove.
We can’t leave our favourite Port Moody-made newcomer off the list. Sea To Sky Candle Co. drops new bi-weekly batches of their signature soy wax candles poured into one-of-a-kind glass, available via their Instagram account. Made locally-sourced biodegradable materials that are 100 per cent recyclable, you can illuminate your space without sacrificing sustainability.
We love the female-founded candle company, Homecoming, for their feel-good candles made from natural soy wax and chemical-free essential oils. The Warm Candle Bundle ($84) gives you a trio of their must-haves: Amber & Bitter Orange, Black Tea & Pepper, and Cardamom & Star Anise—perfect for those of us who can’t pick a favourite.
