Here’s How Cezanne Can Eliminate Your Frizzy-Hair Woes (Win!)

Hi Alix! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start!

I am a mother, avid runner and hair stylist! After a decade-long academic “process of elimination,” I finally went into hair at the Aveda Institute in Gastown Vancouver. It’s safe to say that, nine years later with my own company, Alix Arthur Design Inc., I love my craft and the joy it gives those who land in my chair. I genuinely love going to work … and dropping my 2- and 4-year-old girls off at daycare, ha! While I specialize in colour and smoothing, a fabulous cut ties it all together seamlessly. When I’m not in the salon, I can be found running the seawall or running after my littles dispensing snacks on an Eastside playground.

First there was Japanese straightening, then Brazilian. When did Cezanne come along, what is it, and what makes it different?

Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment launched in North American salons in late 2013. Product line followed in 2014. Japanese hair straightening, a.k.a. Thermal Reconditioning, actually changes the internal bond in human hair resulting in a permanent poker-straight look. Think perm, except with a straight result. The service can take up to five hours, can potentially cause hair breakage and loss, and contains an irritant called ammonium thioglycolate that can trigger allergic response. The Brazilian Blowout is semi-permanent keratin treatment that lasts between two and four months. Keratin is a tough protein found in hair, nails and skin. In a hair treatment, it smoothens out the hair cuticle (fights frizz!) and reduces, not eliminates, wave or curl. Unfortunately, the Brazilian Blowout (and most other keratin treatments) contain liquid formaldehyde. Not desirable or safe! Bring in Cezanne Keratin Smoothing, a 100 per cent formaldehyde-free keratin treatment that lasts up to five months. Who is Cezanne for? What can clients expect, results-wise?

Cezanne is for absolutely anyone (naturally straight, wavy, textured or curly) who would like less frizz and no pouf! That pretty much sums up every Vancouverite; temperate rainforest drawback. You can expect up to five months of 50 per cent less blow-dry time and an ability to wear your natural curls one day and flat iron straight the next. Versatility without compromising the treatment longevity.

What is the process (take us through a treatment, step-by-step)?

Expect to sit in the chai rfor about three hours—bring snacks! I will wash your hair twice with Cezanne clarifying shampoo. I will rough blow-dry your hair and then apply the treatment. You will process for half an hour, potentially under heat for certain hair textures. I will rinse out the product with lukewarm water and be careful to keep a certain amount in the hair. This is followed by a pristine round-brush blow-dry and then a flat iron to seal the Sericin within the hair follicle. Sericin is what sets Cezanne apart from all the rest. It is a component of silk and it cements itself between strands of keratin, replacing lost and damaged protein mass. And, voila, smooth hair.

So, as a pro, what do YOU love best about Cezanne?

Tames frizz with styling options, and improves the integrity of the hair more and more with each service! I alternate wearing my hair straight one week and wavy the next. And the wave holds for days! As a stylist, I love that you can colour hair immediately before or after the treatment and that neither party is exposed to harsh chemicals. As an athlete, I love that you can go on a run immediately post treatment and not have to worry about washing your hair. As a mom, I cannot express how amazing it feels and looks to just rough blow dry and go. Best. Thing. Ever. Because we all want to look good. And we all have next to nil time to do so.
