Indulge In Some “Me-Time” With #SelfCareSunday

March 30, 2021

Now more than ever, Canadians (present company included) are taking a moment to focus on themselves by practising moments of gratitude and self-care. In the last 12 months, the use of #SelfCareSunday was up almost 400 per cent from the year prior, showing that people are reclaiming the day as one where they can switch-off and invest in themselves. All you need to do is check out your timeline on Sundays and you’ll see the proof! Whether it be morning meditation, trying a new skin-care routine or something as simple as trying a red lip, these small moments help us feel more connected to ourselves, balanced and renewed, which is why Shoppers Drug Mart is partnering with four self-care experts to share a range of tips, tricks and interactive Instagram Lives to ensure Canadians have a restful and rejuvenating #SelfCareSunday.

The lives will explore everything from fitness tips, beauty hacks and ways to relax hosted by Canadian lifestyle experts, including fitness pro, Zehra Allibhai; TedX alumnus, Musemo Handahu; body positivity expert, Assa Cisse; and beauty expert and YouTuber Jaclyn Forbes. #ShoppersSelfCare Sundays run weekly now through Sunday, April 18th on IG (@shoppersdrugmart); we chatted with Zehra, whose segment was live this past weekend! —Vita Daily

Hi Zehra! How did the #SelfCareSunday partnership between yourself and Shoppers Drug Mart come about, and what makes it a perfect fit for you?

Self-care has always been such an essential part of my routine—we should all try to find little moments to be good to ourselves! As a mother, fitness coach and kinesiologist, my days can be so hectic that it’s important to make intentional, dedicated time to take care of myself. Shoppers Drug Mart is encouraging Canadians to make that all-important “me time” with self-care Sundays this spring, and as a topic I’m so passionate about, I couldn’t wait to jump onboard and share my recommendations to feel your very best.

What is the #SelfCareSunday campaign all about/what does it entail or aim to do, and why is it particularly relevant now, more than ever?

Shoppers Drug Mart’s #SelfCareSunday initiative is encouraging Canadians to make Sundays all about you—after all, taking care of yourself is a beautiful thing! Self-care is especially important, more so now than ever before. Together, we’re encouraging Canadians to take care of their mind and body, to help everyone take on each day with confidence, rejuvenation and serenity.

When it comes to self-care, what are your top tips and techniques? Is there anything you do, personally, that goes beyond the standard self-care practices of bubble baths and morning meditations?

I really think for self-care, you need to take a moment and listen to what your body truly needs. Some days it’s a bubble bath and a face mask, and other days it may be some proper nutrients for your body to feel it’s best. For me self care changes from week to week. I love that I can read a book in bed with my favourite candle one week and the next I get out and go for a walk while I listen to my fave podcast and can feel just as energized and refreshed by each one. The most important thing is to listen to your body and do what you feel will help you feel your best.

If you could choose one product available at Shoppers Drug Mart to help boost your self-care routine, what would it be?

It’s hard to choose just one! Here are my top picks:

  • Life Brand Epsom Salts: there’s nothing quite as rejuvenating as a warm bath! Epsom Salts increase the relaxing effects of a bath; they contain magnesium and sulfate that get absorbed through our skin to help replenish the body’s levels of magnesium to ease stress.
  • Nivea Q10 Energy Anti-Wrinkle Aging Cream. I’m a firm believer that skin-love = self-love! This night cream has a unique combination of three natural antioxidants—coenzyme Q10, vitamin C and vitamin E—which revitalize skin while you sleep! It always leaves my skin with a radiant and healthy glow.
