CIFF NOTES

September 17, 2014

just eat it a food waste storyThe Calgary International Film Festival returns September 18th to 28th, with more than 200 film screenings over 10 festival days.

There’s something for everyone in this year’s lineup: indie, Canadian, international, documentary and Hollywood studio films. Here are our top three picks:

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spibet: The opening gala will feature the North American premiere of The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spibet, starring Rick Mercer, Callum Keith Rennie and Kyle Catlett (all of whom will be in Calgary to walk the red carpet). The story of a brilliant young inventor who runs away from his oddball family to travel across the country alone seems epically Canadian to us.

Foxcatcher: This real-life drama satrs Steve Carell, Tatum Channing and Mark Ruffalo. It’s based on the life of Olympic wrester Mark Schultz and his brother, who get involved with a wealthy, neurotic coach. Heart-pounding and tragic, Foxcatcher is already gaining Oscar buzz, and is most definitely on our can’t-miss CIFF list.

Just Eat It, A Food Waste Story: This Canadian doc (and Green Carpet Gala film) looks at just how much food we trash each year via filmmakers Grant Baldwin and Jen Rustemeyer, who vow to live off of only discarded food.

Funky, but fascinating. —Sara Samson
