Hi Rizwan! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

Hello, my name is Rizwan Malik and I am a realtor with Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. I was recently featured on HGTV Canada on a show called Hot Market.

The weather is (finally!) heating up and we’re looking forward to spending lots more time outside; that said, what trends are you seeing in outdoor decor this season?

The biggest trend that I am seeing this season, a definite carryover from last year, is the need to have outdoor space. People are desperate for any type of patio, balcony or even a patch of grass to call their own. That said, comfortable seating and a sturdy table for those WFH Zoom calls!

What are your top five must-haves for a porch, patio or balcony?

  • Flooring: Definitely invest in flooring, it completes the look and makes things look super polished.
  • Comfortable seating: Whether you plan to sit outside for a quick beer or to bask in the sun, please ensure you have comfortable seating. You’ll thank your-self later.
  • A sturdy table! And watch how quickly working from home becomes working from PATIO!
  • Plants! Bring life to your balcony, hanging baskets, planters, or even a little herb garden. Let there be life!
  • An umbrella: I know, the sunshine and warmer days are just getting here, but it is also important to protect yourself from the elements. Too much sun can also be a thing, so try to give yourself some relief by ensuring you have some sort of shade.

What are some common mistakes or missteps you see homeowners make when it comes to decorating their outdoor spaces?

Just like with the inside of your home, ‘less is more’ also applies to your balcony! Try not to overcrowd with plants, furniture and other things that don’t belong. I have seen people use their balconies as a storage facility, which is something you want to try and avoid.

What about tight-squeeze spaces (condo balconies, for example)? How about renters, who may move frequently?

If you have a small balcony, my top five must-haves can still apply. It just means you’ll have to do the on a smaller scale. Don’t shortchange yourself, live your best life.

What one key piece will you be adding to your personal patio space this summer?

I will be adding a water fountain. I’m a water sign and the peaceful sounds of water have always resonated deeply with me!
