More and more men are coming to us at Project Skin MD for guidance on how to achieve great skin. And while great skin is not limited to the ladies, our recommendations for men are different in many ways. Here are our top five tips for men to achieve the great skin they are after:
clear up your beard-area with a quality cleanser. There are two types of testosterone, testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), that contribute to beard growth. Testosterone primes the hair follicle and DHT promotes linear growth of the hair within the follicle. Both of these hormones are linked to sebum production, which can lead to breakouts and clogged pores. To address this, we recommend a clarifying cleanser, such as SkinCeuticals LHA Cleansing Gel, that combines a blend of salicylic acids to exfoliate the skin and address breakouts. Cleansing the skin with a quarter-sized amount of the gel twice a day will help control the sebum production, as well as to reduce visible signs of aging!
target brown spots with intense pulsed light. Brown spots that develop from not wearing (or reapplying!) SPF leave the skin looking dull and us looking older. Treatment with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) offers a great solution to improve the tone and texture of your skin. IPL eliminates some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure, otherwise known as photo-aging. Dramatic results can be achieved in a series of 3-4 treatments. Bonus tip: before applying your daily SPF, adding in 3-4 drops of an antioxidant serum like SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF in the morning will protect your skin from environmental aggressors, refine skin texture, improve uneven skin tone, all which compliment the results of IPL treatment.
soften harsh lines and wrinkles with neuromodulators. Neuromodulators (such as the commonly known Botox) can give the face a subtle yet softer appearance. By injecting a small amount of neuromodulator into the muscle beneath the skin surface, wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet can be smoothed out. There is no need to fear looking frozen, as a good injector knows how to use neuromodulators to achieve a more youthful expression that still moves naturally.
reduce redness with vascular laser. Facial redness is common in men, particularly due to a type of rosacea that only affects men called rhinophyma. Rhinophyma causes the skin of the nose to thicken and appear red and bulbous. To address facial redness, we recommend a series of 4-5 Vascular Laser treatments, which maintenance treatments as required. Also, SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel is a lightweight, oil-free serum that can be incorporated into your skincare routine to combat redness. It combines hyaluronic acid with a botanical blend of cucumber, thyme, olive leaf, and other calming botanical ingredients for a soothing effect.
protect your skin daily with spf! In addition to the sun’s aging effects, men are more likely than women to get skin cancer, including melanoma, which can be life-threatening! Consistent, daily application of sunscreen is crucial for reducing your risk and improving your overall skin health. We recommend mineral-based formulations, which do not clog pores, such as SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF, Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF and Physical Matte UV Defense SPF. All of these SPF formulations provide a high level of broad-spectrum sun protection with chemical-free UV filters. Applying a quarter size amount daily, with reapplication during prolonged exposure, after sweating or swimming, will keep your skin protected. —Jessica Berto, medical aesthetician and trainer, Project Skin MD
