Douglas Coupland’s 3DCanada Hits Park Royal

Douglas CouplandNot every day do you get to have a 3D bust made of you by artist Douglas Coupland.

That’s exactly what our EIC Sarah Bancroft did this morning when she participated in Coupland’s 3DCanada project at Simons Park Royal West Vancouver. The fourth stop in his six-city tour in partnership with Simons, the project will give 100 Canadians in each locale the chance to have their bust printed using 3D technology (for pick-up the following week).

Though we’d love to have one of these in our homes (check out Coupland’s and Bancroft’s pictured), the project isn’t all about shameless vanity. Coupland will use copies of each bust gathered from now until 2017 to create a cross-country portrait featuring Canadians from Vancouver to Quebec City—a comment on where we’re going as a nation, technologically.

How cool is that?—Vitamin Daily

Douglas Coupland’s 3D Canada installation at Park Royal is genius—those massive, colorful 3D-printed letters spelling out “CANADA” feel like a bold love letter to national identity, blending pop art with tech in such a public, playful way! As someone who’s geeked out on 3D art projects, it makes me want to recreate mini versions for my desk—sourced some customizable letter models and extrusion tools from https://3dexport.com/ last week; royalty-free, exports to Cura in seconds, and under $15 for the pack. Printed a “HOME” set that turned out crisp—perfect for holiday gifting. Who’s inspired to 3D-print their own word art? Share your twists!

Douglas Coupland’s 3DCanada project was ahead of its time in thinking about art and technology. It highlighted how digital culture could manifest physically. That vision is now everyday reality with 3D printing. The quest for unique, conversation-starting pieces continues. Today, instead of large installations, many find that creativity in sourcing and printing their own cool 3d models. Online communities and marketplaces are full of designs that blend art, pop culture, and innovation, allowing anyone to become a curator and creator of unique physical objects that reflect our digital age.
