We’ve previously reviewed Canadian Club Chronicles Issue No. 1 and 2. We were not overwhelmed by the first release but blown away by the second. No. 3 is aged 43 years in oak cask. It is the oldest Canadian whisky around. The Canadian Club Chronicles are over three times older than the next oldest whiskies of the brand (aged 12 years). They are in a league of their own.
The nose is floral, oaky, sweet and very promising. The taste is smooth. A deep note of chocolate brownie rests on top of the tongue. The finish is leathery and complex. It is a delicious whisky. Thankfully, this No. 3 is far closer to 2 than it is to 1. But is it better than 2?
We have a slight preference for the No. 2 edition over this No. 3. The 2 is about $10 cheaper, which makes essentially no difference since the 3 is worth $320. In any event, No. 3 was rightfully awarded the title of Canadian whisky of the year. It is a collectable and delectable whisky for distinguishing and fortunate amateurs. —Guillaume Garih
