Whether you like tricks, treats, ghouls or goblins, there are lots of fun ways to make Halloween extra special. And it’s all in the food! Yes, candy is good, but a Halloween-themed snack, meal or dessert is even better, and will make the holiday that much more memorable. Here are 10 quick ideas to try! —Jennifer Cox
scary school snacks. Use a permanent marker to draw pumpkin faces on oranges, tangerines or clementines, or to make a long spooky ghost face on packaged string cheese. Wrap their water bottle or juice box with medical gauze. Add two googly eyes and voila: you have a mummy. Make Dracula teeth: cut two thick apple slices and spread peanut butter on one side of each. Line up mini marshmallows along the edge of one half and sandwich together (peanut butter side to peanut butter side).
little monster meals. Halloween-shaped cookie cutters can be used to make fun-shaped pancakes, mini pizzas and sandwiches. Strategically placed pepperoni can help you create a Jack-o-lantern face, and strips of mozzarella cheese can mummify a pizza. Speaking of mummies, buy refrigerated crescent roll dough and cut into strips, then wrap around hot dogs. And speaking of hot dogs (ha!), turn wieners into bloody fingers by cutting away a small surface area at the top to resemble a nail, as well as a few slits in the middle of the hot dog as knuckles. Put in a bun with some splattered ketchup. Turn meatloaf into a giant monster foot by shaping a pound of raw seasoned meat into a foot with toes and use five small pieces of onion as toenails (when it cooks the onion turns yellow and looks really gross!). Where the top of the ankle would be, put ketchup.
diabolical dessert. Make brownies or cupcakes (from a box is the easiest) in individual muffin tins. Then, using white icing, pipe one small circle, then one medium circle, and one large circle. Use a toothpick and, starting at the centre, drag it outwards. Repeat around the circle to create spiderweb treats. Rice Krispie treats can be dyed orange and molded into pumpkins (with a small mini Rolo candy as a stem), or dyed lime green and cut into rectangles to turn into Frankenstein (use two mini Rolos as bolts on the side of his head, candy eyes, and chocolate frosting for hair and a smile).
