Continuing in the vein of lovely loungewear (we really can’t get enough of it), Studio is a woman-run Canadian sustainable luxury loungewear brand that created the Daysuit—a comfortable, sustainable and fashionable one-piece featuring a customizable wrap that makes you feel sculpted in all the right places. We chatted with founders Gargi and Caitlyn about the process behind the creation of this most-perfect piece of clothing, and are giving you a chance to win! —Noa Nichol
Hi Gargi and Caitlyn! Please tell us a bit about yourselves to start.
Caitlyn and I met when we worked at a children’s wear brand together in 2018 and were immediately attracted to each others’ energies, love for cats and doing good in the world.
When and why did you launch your label, Studio? What niche were/are you aiming to fill in the fashion space? (Tell us about sustainability, too!)
We officially decided to work together in October 2020. I still joke about how I proposed to Caitlyn to work on a clothing label with me and she was crazy enough to say yes! Both the brand (Studio) and the product (Daysuit) had no name yet and the kinks were not ironed out. We knew we wanted to create something beautiful for the women of the pandemic, working from home, running errands, eating well, working out and just generally transitioning through different activities and phases of their day. Our aim for the brand is to elevate everyday experiences by creating elevated essentials, and not save them for special moments. Studio is the deliberate confluence of slow-fashion with the allure of luxury. Having worked in the fashion industry for a combined total of over 10 years, we are acutely aware of the harm it has on the environment. Our only mandate when we started was that if we are creating a product out of any material, let it go back to the earth from where it came and let it be produced ethically. All Studio Daysuits are ethically made in small-batches with a family-run factory in Tirupur, India. Caitlyn has a personal relationship with the factory and has visited the facility where all Daysuits are made. The conditions in which the daysuits are produced exceed expectations—all workers are fairly compensated, lighting and ventilation conditions are all above expectations. All Studio Daysuits are made with Lenzing Ecovero viscose fibres with a hint of spandex for that signature Studio fit. These fibres are made using sustainable wood and pulp procured from certified forests in Austria and Bavaria. Manufactured via a closed-loop process, it extracts and reuses all chemicals from one production run to the next. Ecovero production generates up to 50 per cent lower emissions and water impact compared to conventional viscose.
What products do you currently offer in your collection (we’re talking about the fabulous Daysuit, of course!), and what makes them unique?
Our debut collection features three signature Studio styles in three fresh, earthy hues: Nostalgia Rose, Tarragon and Caviar. The Petra Daysuit (current bestseller) is an easy laid-back style that is just as perfect for a morning of reading a book in your favourite corner to an elegant laid back dinner in the night. The Petra neckline is just so flattering on all bodies and makes you feel sexy and confident. The Bora Daysuit is for the girl working out or doing yoga in the morning transitioning to a day of either running around or working from home. The high neck and spaghetti strap back is perfect for a Zoom meeting as it makes you feel polished and put together. Best part, you don’t need to figure out what bottoms you’re wearing! The Muscat Daysuit is the “does-everything” suit. You can dress it up, dress it down and it always looks fabulous. Sporting a low-cut front and back neckline, fitted long sleeves and mid thigh length shorts, this piece effortlessly transitions through your day. Best of all, it’s bra friendly.
When it comes to Studio’s gorgeous Daysuit, what about it makes mornings easier and evenings elevated? Why should every woman own one?!
The one thing the pandemic taught us is that there is no fixed attire for each activity anymore. The new-age consumer is looking for looks that travel through their days with them, that work for many activities all at once and do so with effortless ease. Waking up during the lockdown and having to figure out what to wear for the day was such a daunting task for us, because we were either not dressing up at all or always having to figure out tops and bottoms that would invariably be uncomfortable and most likely not suitable to step out of the house in. The Daysuit in full certainty makes your morning routine more pleasurable. Feeling the fabric slip onto you in the beginning of the day no matter what your day is going to look like is such a pleasurable experience. The fabric is so soft, luxurious and breathable and makes it a pleasure to wear into your evenings of either lounging or going out. No outfit change necessary.
Your top personal tips for styling our Studio Daysuit?
Gargi: I love throwing on a linen shirt on top of all my Daysuits. They elevate the look, give you that extra texture and are a nice add on. My go-to is a soft worn-in white linen shirt. I also love styling my Daysuit with the square knot, its such a simple wrap style and classes up the whole look and best of all, its so simple. Just tie a knot twice in the front and finish it up in the back.
Caitlyn: As the queen of comfort, I love pairing any Daysuit with white sneakers and a denim jacket. It creates an effortless, chic look that is perfect for picking up groceries, walking the dog or a casual Sunday brunch with the girls. I tend to tie my wrap in a classic bow as it gives the illusion of a tiny waist while camouflaging a full belly after said brunch.
How will each of you be rocking your Daysuit this fall and winter?
Gargi: Knee-high boots with all the Daysuits are my go-to this fall/winter. They are easy to slip-on (just like the Daysuit) and finish it up with a mid-length wool coat. Add a beret if you’re feeling fancy.
Caitlyn: Mid length boots with a chunky knit are my go-to for both inside the house and outside.
Win! A Studio Daysuit!
