Hand-Painted Bodywear Essentials

Today we’re sharing some exciting Canadian fashion news! Featuring no clasps, wires or tags and all performance, HIRRS has relaunched Orchid Clay, the first floral design to the line of bodywear essentials. With autumn accents of amber, taupe, violet, copper and baby blue, Orchid Clay is an original hand-painted floral print designed in collaboration with Vancouver-based artist Ryle O’Bryne. These limited-edition pieces are now available across all styles of bras and bodysuits and select bottoms—all made on the coast of British Columbia in O’Bryne’s studio. We chatted with HIRRS founders Lacey and Elizabeth to learn more. —Noa Nichol

When and why did you launch HIRRS? What niche were/are you aiming to fill with the brand?

HIRRS is inspired by our desire to create beautiful, functional bodywear—pieces that connect women to how they feel in their bodies and support them as they move throughout the day. We believe that when a woman feels at home in her body, she feels at home in the world and this in turn provides her with the freedom and confidence to lead a life that is uniquely her own; one that pushes boundaries, shifts perspectives and creates new ways of seeing for herself and others. HIRRS was brought to market just over a year-and-a-half ago with a seasonless and edited product line developed to ensure that every design in the collection serves a unique purpose and function.

What products do you offer, and what makes them unique? (Please tell us about your decision, in creating your range, to do away with wires, tags and clasps.)

Based on our past experience in working in performance apparel, we recognized a tremendous opportunity to bring the functional and technical aspects found in women’s performance garments into everyday intimates. By using functional fabrics and applying performance based techniques to our designs, we have been able to design pieces that not only perform for you throughout the day, they also feel amazing on the body. This has allowed for us to remove the most uncomfortable components (wires, tags and clasps) of women’s intimates while ensuring that function and performance are not sacrificed. The HIRRS collection currently consists of eight edited designs, all serving a specific purpose, function and fit depending on the bodywear needs of each woman.

Congrats on the relaunch of Orchid Clay! We love this design, featuring a hand-painted floral print by Vancouver-based artist Ryle O’Bryne; why did you bring it back, and how “limited” are these limited-edition pieces?

Orchid Clay never actually went away. When Orchid Clay initially launched it was only offered in limited styles. Given the response and the request to extend the offering into additional styles, we were fortunate enough to be able to do so. Orchid Clay will continue to remain in the collection until it is gone.

We know we can wear our Orchid Clay set under our clothes, but they seem too pretty for just that purpose! Do you have any other suggestions on how to rock them this season?

Another reason why we strive to eliminate wires, tags and clasps is it also allows for easy layering under all types of styles. Pieces that have open backs or sheer fabrics tend to serve really well in offering opportunities to expose the beauty of the Orchid Clay.
