When Canadian designer Nicole Benisti needed a face to front her latest collection, supermodel Candice Swanepoel was the perfect fit. After all, the range, which includes luxurious statement coats and is designed in Montreal, is for women who exude effortless elegance, sophistication and glamour. “Candice’s beauty is quite literally ethereal, I knew her training as a ballet dancer would transform the coats so eloquently. That alongside her ability to balance motherhood and fashion is really what drew me to her,” says Nicole, who took cues from Swanepoel’s unique sartorial perspective for her latest designs. “She embodies the strength of the modern woman I envision while designing the collection.” We chatted with Nicole, below, to find out more. —Noa Nichol
Hi Nicole! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
I’ve always been someone that felt more comfortable expressing myself through my designs. Nicole Benisti represents luxury while being coy. I think less is more. Beautiful rich fabrics in a powerful silhouette is all the statement you need to make.
Congratulations on the launch of your FW 21/22 collection; it is truly gorgeous! What was the inspiration behind this collection?
Thank you so much! I truly think this is our best collection yet. Coming from Montreal, we need true winter coats but Nicole Benisti has always been about sophisticating the functionality of it and creating statement outerwear through unexpected delicate fabrics.
What pieces are included and/or standouts in the range?
The collection is predominantly puffers but made from luxe tweeds, bold lamb shearlings with contrasting mixed-media detailing, sumptuous cashmere and mohair which give them such a refined and unique aesthetic.
Who do you consider to be the “Nicole Benisti” woman, and what makes your designs unique?
I think the Nicole Benisti woman is extremely confident but never flamboyant. Winter is arguably everyone’s least favourite season so with every coat, I imagine the wearer and want to give her a reason to be excited to step outside the door while wearing Benisti.

What one piece from the FW 21/22 collection will you personally be rocking on repeat this winter?
The tweeds have become synonymous with Nicole Benisti and naturally, a personal favourite but I am so in love with the cashmere knit puffers we launched this season. I can’t wait for the weather to turn to starting wearing mine!
