4 Top Winter Scents

November 4, 2021

As the temps begin to drop, our minds shift to feeling cosy and festive. One of the easiest ways to invoke that winter-wonderland state-of-mind is through our senses, specifically smell. Below are some of our fave products crafted with popular winter scents so that you and your home can feel holiday ready. —Vicki Duong

mint. Perhaps the most iconic scent of the holiday season, mint always reminds us of sweet candy canes and peppermint mochas. Because it’s such a familiar scent, it’s important to ground it with something sweet so it can remind us of cooler temps versus a trip to the dentist. As a home fragrance and linen spray, we’ve been loving the Candy Land scent ($25) from Vancouver’s own Heim Goods. The essential oil blend is grounded with sweet vanilla to balance the crisp mint scent. And, since we love a multi-tasking product, it’s no wonder that the Fresh Sugar Hydrating Lip Balm ($24) is a must-have when our lips begin to chap. Our choice scent-pick is the Lime Mint, formulated with vitamin E and grapeseed oils for extra moisture and protection from the elements.

pine. For the nature enthusiast, nothing says Christmas is in the air than the smell of the great outdoors, specifically the smell of pine. While having a real tree in our home might be a no-no due to fire hazards, we can still introduce the scent of the great outdoors into our routine this winter. Keep things festive without sweatin’ it with Native’s limited-edition Fresh Mistletoe deodorant ($12 USD). The deo is scented with a hint of cedar and sandalwood while a naturally derived formula provides effective odour protection throughout the day. Did we mention that it’s also aluminum and cruelty-free? This deodorant is anything but the pits. For a unique twist on the great outdoors indoors, light a Noche Beuna ($35) candle from Kilig Candle Co. Based in Vancouver, this 100 per cent soy candle features the familiar scent of Douglas Fir paired with unexpected Shizuka apple for a clean sweet scent. Don’t wait too long to snag one, this limited-edition candle is consistently a best seller for the local brand.

fireside. Is there anything more cosy than curling up by the fire? Not only is the warmth inviting, but the sweet scent of a crackling fire invites slow days with those you love. While some of us might not have access to a fireplace that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend with earthy and warm scents. Your guests will be delighted and feel at home whenever you add the limited Fireside blend ($28) from Vitruvi to your diffuser this holiday season. Featuring top notes of nutmeg and wild orange, and bottom notes of cinnamon and fir, Fireside smells like curling up with your fave book. If you’re looking to really spoil yourself this winter, Tom Ford fragrances are an opulent indulgence. Our fave winter fragrance at the moment is the newest addition, Ebene Fume Eau de Parfum ($335). Enriched with palo santo, black pepper and leather leaves a deep woody and seductive scent while a stunning glass bottle with gold-tone makes the Tom Ford a gorgeous addition to any vanity.

vanilla. When selecting inherently sweet scents, a refined blend makes the difference between sickly-sweet to refined-elegance. With vanilla-forward blends we’re opting for products that feature a warmth to them for added maturity. When temps drop we find our skin feeling drier than ever. To combat that we’ve been indulging in the Summer Friday’s Summer Skin Nourishing Body Lotion ($35). A blend of plant-derived butters and ceramides helps keep your skin moisturize and helps strengthen its natural protective barrier while a non-greasy formula leaves a light fragrance of coconut, vanilla blossom and warm almond. And, lighting a vanilla candle without making your place smell like the inside of a cake can be challenging, but Studio Apartment takes all the guesswork out of fragrance layering with their Sticks & Tabac candle ($40). The blend features vanilla, honey and tonka to keep it sweet while notes of tobacco and amber adds warmth to your space.
