When it comes to taking a risk in the name of fashion, we’re all for it—but there must be a fine line between haute couture and haute mess, right? Denim has been an essential part of every wardrobe for decades but we can hardly recognize it among the latest trends. We were apprehensive about the return of the classic ’90s “mom jean” but eventually welcomed the loose-fitting style back into our roster. However, when celebrity A-listers including super model Gigi Hadid and reality star Khloe Kardashian started wearing “jorts” (not quite full jeans and not quite shorts) we had to question their fash-ment. From fake mud to bum bearing, here are some of the most absurd denim fads of the year.
Just when we thought the fashion industry was taking a break from presenting the world with unconventional jean styles it hits us with $604 "Detachable Cut-Out Front Jeans" that come adorned with hidden buttons which can be used to remove the pant legs leaving behind itsy bitsy booty shorts… Y/Project has got to be kidding.
If you’re seeking a pair of jeans that flaunt your best asset, look no further than this risqué collab between design house Vetements and Levi’s. For a cool $1,700 you could be the proud owner of this zipper-adorned creation (though we’re not sure it’d pass on casual Friday).
Up next is an odd fashion statement made by trendy Kendall Jenner. A photo of the young model wearing what appears to be jean shorts with an oversized button-down shirt poking out the bottom was snapped by the paparazzi. But wait, it gets weirder. Upon closer inspection we noticed her “shorts” are actually connected to cuffs around her ankles by frayed seams running down her legs. Even on Victoria’s Secret Angel-worthy gams, we’re not convinced the trend will catch on.
Perhaps even stranger than Jenner’s “invisible jean” is the latest denim release from Topshop. These completely translucent “jeans” go for $100 with a description that reads, “Think outside the box with these out-of-the-ordinary clear plastic jeans—guaranteed to get people talking.” Well, they sure got that right.
The most recent trend to garner social media buzz are these “mud stained” jeans sold at Nordstrom for $425. The Barracuda Straight Leg Jeans come with fake dirt stains caked all over them for that REALLY rugged look. That’s it fashion, you’ve gone too far.
While we appreciate the creativity, we’ll stick to our classic blue jeans. —Johnnie Smart
