December 2, 2021

There’s hot chocolate, and then there’s haute hot chocolate—the kind of hot chocolate that is super rich and creamy with a deep cocoa flavour that warms you up from head to toe. While you’re busy doing for others this holiday season, treat yourself with a cup of haute hot chocolate. —Jennifer Cox

Pump Street Drinking Chocolate ($19) is a smooth and fruity drinking chocolate that is made with beans sourced from St Vincent Cocoa Company, a co-operative committed to improving cocoa growing and providing a market for small growers across the Caribbean island. It’s made with 75% dark chocolate and then shaved into the perfect flakes for melting into warm milk.

Dick Taylor’s Craft Chocolate’s Peppermint Drinking Chocolate ($20, sold through savorly.ca) is a rich and velvety European-style drinking chocolate that is handcrafted using ethically sourced cocoa beans from the Sambirano Valley in Madagascar. It’s mixed with crushed pieces of natural peppermint candy for the perfect festive kick.

Angelina’s Hot Chocolate Bottle ($28) combines superb cocoa from Niger, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast to make for an irresistibly full-bodied and creamy hot chocolate. This hot chocolate, which comes from renowned Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer, has been a go-to Paris recipe since the early 1900s, and it must be heated in a bain-marie.

For over-the-top hot chocolate enthusiasts, there’s the luxurious Ugolini Delice Hot Chocolate Machine (available through Cook Store, $1708). This cool, compact countertop appliance can be used to mix hot chocolate and other thick drinks. It’s easy to use and features an elegant, sleek design. But get ready: everyone is going to request a hot chocolate from this sweet gadget!
