Addressing (Finally) The Great Canadian Bagel Debate

January 13, 2022

National Bagel Day is coming up quick—January 15—and Dempster’s is celebrating by encouraging Canadians to share their most common or even surprising bagel preferences and engage in the Great Bagel Debate. Sweet or savoury? Bay-gel or Bah-gel? From fave toppings to pronunciation, when it comes to one of Canada’s most beloved foods, everyone has an opinion!

To find out the truth about one of Canadians’ most hotly debated and beloved foods, Dempster’s conducted a national survey. Its top findings:

  • Almost half (46 per cent) of Canadian bagel lovers feel strongly about the way they enjoy their bagels.
  • The most popular bagel topping among almost three quarters (73 per cent) of Canadian bagel lovers is cream cheese.
  • However, Canadians love wacky and unique combinations as other contenders including mustard (18 per cent), guacamole (18 per cent), pickles (15 per cent) and even pesto (10 per cent) also made the cut.

Whatever your take, it’s clear that Canadians love their bagels (personally, we’re loving Dempster’s new Brioche Bagel; made with real eggs and butter and inspired by French tradition, they have an irresistibly sweet, buttery finish and are crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Also a fave at our place: Dempster’s Maple French Toast: truly Canadian, the taste of maple syrup comes to life with warm cinnamon flavour in every bite!). —Vita Daily
