What To Eat For Lunar New Year 2022

It’s the Year of the Tiger, and we’re eager to sample ALL the Asian culinary delights. Here’s where to find the best meals and treats in Vancouver celebrating a happy, healthy new year. —Catherine Dunwoody

Cambie Village’s Potluck Hawker Eatery offers a take-out only eight-course feast, available on January 31 and February 1 only, featuring eight lucky Malaysian, Singaporean and Chinese dishes, including favourites like truffled soy sauce chicken, whole fried fish, salted egg yolk prawns and more ($200 and serves four to five people). Pre-order online.

The Shangri-La Hotel has created some elegant sweets including the matcha snowflake crisp (a bit like nougat), koi fish candy (representing family and wealth in Chinese culture) and YuanYuan ManMan (butter cookies). Available for pick up or delivery from January 26 to February 15. Please order 48 hours in advance here.

Buttermere Patisserie’s Tiger Gift Box includes snowflake crisps, a chewy and fruity nougat candy made with freeze-dried berries, nuts and Ritz cookies, plus koi-shaped hard candy, black sesame brittle and pork floss rice krispy. From $68; pre-order here for pick up or delivery January 26 to February 6.  

Sun Sui Wah on Main Street has a variety of meal offerings, including Poon Choi, a multi-layered dish that can be traced back to the late Song dynasty more than 700 years ago. Layered in a deep dish and served family-style, this includes 16 premium ingredients including abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, dried oysters, dried scallop and black moss. The Noodle Bar at Koi in Parq Vancouver Hotel will offer a special dish of 3 Treasure Rice with soy chicken, roast kand bbq pork with Shanghai bok choy on rice for $12.88 (lucky eights) from January 21 to February 11. As well, Passione has created a special flavour for LNY: Roasted Oolong Gelato.  

Heritage Asian Eatery has a special feast from January 28 to February 6 for dine-in or take-out from their Broadway location. Four people can dine on ham and prawn dumplings, sticky rice buns, gai lan, prawn spring rolls, pork and cabbage dumplings, chicken wings and Biang Biang noodles with XO dressing plus Nian Gao for dessert. $118, order online.

Boldly leap into the Year of the Tiger with Beaucoup Bakery’s exclusive Lucky Meow 88 Collection. The sweet and savoury lineup sees the return of Beaucoup Bakery’s famous Peking Duck Croissant collaboration with Chinatown BBQ, as well as a new version using locally crafted Holy Duck Chili Oil. You can also add cookies, a Peanut Sesame Mochi Croissant and custom chili oil to your order, online, for pick up at Beaucoup between January 30 and February 1.
