If the last time you visited Fort Langley was in elementary school, it’s time to start planning a day trip. The area—a village community whose tagline, Birthplace of B.C., pretty much says it all in terms of the historical significance of the place—has in recent years been infused with retailers and restaurateurs whose offerings, both on the rack and on the plate, are truly worth the drive. —Noa Nichol
Bella & Wren, on main drag Glover Road, is a must on the list when it comes to Fort Langley retail therapy. Part women’s clothing boutique, part lifestyle shop, owners Sandra and René stock the freshest fashions (on our shopping list: Mavi jeans, Bella Dahl jumpsuits and Alohas footwear), gorgeous beauty products (for us, picking just one Mistral bar soap to take home turned out to be mission impossible) and décor (pretty stationery from Rifle Paper Co. and candles galore). Bonus: the brand just launched its own line of jewelry and leather bags, with the prettiest details, and we’re in Fort Langley love!
Next, head to the Little White House & Co., in a heritage building boasting original floors, beams and even some fixtures (the lamps were found in the basement and restored to their original glory). The predominant theme here is (as the name suggests) “white,” with a majority of wares in soft, light tones. Peruse every room for dreamy dresses (tulle, tulle and more tulle!) and homey wares (from old-timey breadboxes to fuzzy throw pillows—literally everything but the kitchen sink), while keeping an eye out for a) the secret sale closet on the second storey and b) Hazel the ghost, known to lock doors and playfully tug at hair. Make your purchases and head back to the attached Salon Café—a teahouse with a distinct Parisian feel—for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea.
Desiring denim? You don’t have far to go to find the largest distributor of AG Jeans outside of Vancouver (we hear clients will drive from as far as Hope and Whistler to snag a pair). Aimee B Clothing & Accessories, also on Glover, is a mom-and-daughter-run boutique that, yes, specializes in jeans (they pride themselves on putting the right colour, cut and fit on every client, every time), but also the many lovely pieces that go with them. From the coolest logo tees to the cosiest knit tops to local (Lolo) jewelry and Instagrammer-worthy hats, Aimee B’s stylist staff members are happy to walk you through their selection and put together a killer OOTD.
While we don’t anticipate you’ll tire of refreshing your wardrobe in Fort Langley, it’s worth turning your attention toward the town’s décor offerings, too. Start at Livingroom on Church Street for accessories to level-up every corner of your abode, from Turkish hand towels to vintage mud-cloth cushions to glittering quartz geodes. Shopping for a friend? At Kizmit Gift Gallery, Canadian artists (at least 100 of them, a majority of whom are based in B.C. and several right in Fort Langley) are squarely in the spotlight, and their hand-crafted works (paintings, sculptures, leather goods and more) make browsing a beautiful thing. And don’t forget the flowers. Floralista offers blooms and bouquets for every occasion, plus plants and succulents in adorable pots; we love the flower menu right behind the front desk, which makes picking (read: pricing) the perfect arrangement easy and guesswork free.
Famished? After all that shopping, we don’t blame you and, fortunately, the folks at Sabà Bistro (newly opened, and separate from Sabà Café and Bakery on Mavis Street) want to feed you! Meaning plenty, or abundance, Sabà serves up warming, comforting, nourishing dishes based on owner and head chef Simone Hurwitz’s culinary experiences in Italy and Israel and balanced out by local, seasonal ingredients and flavours. The shakshuka is deep and mellow, with fire-charred peppers, slow-roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, Moroccan spices and farm-fresh eggs, and the challah French toast comes with a warm berry compote you’ll wish you could jar up and take home. Tapas are a treat for two and, come dinnertime, the vongole tagliatelle, with fresh steamed clams, garlic and lemon gremolata, is definitely the way to go.
