Of Myth and Men

June 23, 2014

rosaVancouver artist Roselina Hung’s "Of Myth and Men" is a collision of optical tricks that, rather than crash together, convalesce seamlessly.

Initially, the paintings seem to be of mixed-media — bits of printed material filling in the outlines of figures with stripes and floral prints. In fact, the collection is entirely oil-paint, with each piece an astounding feat of precision. Hung further mixes off-kilter angles, Renaissance-style infinite skyscapes, and vibrant surrealism — at a glance, her work almost appears 3D.

The collection draws upon mythological themes from disparate cultures, creating modern myths based on variations of established themes from Greek, Roman, and Biblical stories.

It’s a visual treat of a collection that provokes thoughts on the fluidity of identity. – Adrienne Matei
