Want To Start A Side Hustle? 3 Savvy Women Will Show You How

March 8, 2022

What’s on the minds of many women these days (team VITA included)? Side hustling! In fact, a recent survey by our friends at no-fee digital banking brand Simplii Financial reveals that 90 per cent of Canadian women aged 18 to 34 are interested in exploring opportunities to earn money outside of their day job; across all age groups, 76 per cent of Canadian women are interested in starting a side hustle.

Abby Albino, co-owner of Makeway, will be on the #SimpliiSideHustle panel

The survey also shows that women in the 18 to 34 bracket are considering side hustles as an alternative income stream, hoping to find new ways to save for major life events including early retirement, making a down payment on a home and growing their overall savings for future needs and plans. Additionally, more than one in three women indicated that start-up capital is a barrier to pursuing a side hustle, which increased to nearly 50 per cent (46 per cent) among those aged 18 to 34.

Of course, no side hustle is complete without a great financial partner. With an aim to make banking accessible and easy for all, Simplii makes it quick and convenient for digitally savvy women to set up a no-fee online chequing account (minus the stress of maintaining a minimum balance for daily transactions), and also start saving for bigger goals—like starting a side hustle—with a high-interest savings account. “Simplii” put, the simplest way to bank and save for a multi-tasking side hustler is a digital solution.

But what does it take to start a successful side hustle? And what are those first steps to get your dream off the ground? Simplii is bringing together a panel of barrier-breaking Canadian women who have launched successful businesses, to offer their tips and advice on getting your side hustle started. The diverse group will share the challenges they faced along the way, and, in recognition of International Women’s Day, will speak to how they’ve challenged gender stereotypes that disempower women (#BreakTheBias) to support a more equitable future for all.

On the #SimpliiSideHustle panel: Canadian entrepreneurs Abby Albino, Avery Francis and Zehra Allibhai. The three will share the challenges they faced in starting their sneaker, consulting and fitness businesses, respectively, and discuss how they’ve challenged gender stereotypes that disempower women, to support a more equitable future. Tickets to attend virtually on March 8 at 2 p.m. EST are free—just pre-register here.

“At Simplii we know that making digital banking convenient and accessible to Canadian women supports financial independence and empowerment,” says Rohini Dhowan, Senior Director, Deposits and Investing, Simplii Financial. “This is why we want to provide a forum for women, no matter where they are on their financial or side hustle journeys, to learn from one another. By starting with the basics, like Simplii’s no-fee chequing account, which eliminates the stress of maintaining a minimum balance, and a high-interest savings account, to encourage everyday savings habits, you can slowly build to your dream.”
