Skincare That Benefits Both Moms & Babes (Win!)

B.C. skincare brand Naetal was born out of necessity during founder Vivian’s Lam’s first pregnancy, when she suffered from a severe itchy pregnancy rash. With her new baby in mind, she wanted to use natural and safe products to help relieve her irritated skin; when she couldn’t find many good options on the market, she set forth to create her own clean and effective line, and discovered the power of colloidal oatmeal and calendula. We chatted with Vivian to learn more. —Noa Nichol

Hi Vivian! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I’m a mom of two boys and have always been a skincare and makeup enthusiast. I’ve been in the beauty industry my whole career—from Blanche Macdonald, to working at Laura Mercier, Chantecaille and then managing more than 150 brands at Duty Free Shop internationally.

When and why did you launch Naetal? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

The idea of Naetal started when I was 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby and experienced a severe pregnancy PUPPP rash, and I could not find a product on the market that was both safe for my baby and effective in calming this incredibly itchy rash. After almost two years of perfecting a clean formulation of our Original Serum and having it tried and tested on pregnant, postpartum moms and babies, Naetal was launched in July 2021, aiming to help moms simplify their decision in choosing clean and effective skincare for the whole family.

What products do you currently offer? What makes them unique, and who and what are they for?

We have two main collections for moms and babies that include seven products:

• Original Serum: This serum is packed with a high concentration of colloidal oatmeal, triple hyaluronic acid and organic calendula to help ease any irritation including pregnancy rashes. Great for the face to deeply hydrate and plump skin, the Original Serum is a family staple and safe to use even on babies with irritated skin.
• Mama/ Belly Butter: A nourishing oil-based butter that glides on to protect skin while improving stretch marks, cellulite and overall skin elasticity with our specially infused gotu kola argan oil.
• Oat & Lavender Bath: A soothing and relaxing therapeutic bath for any mamas who just wanted to unwind in a bath or use it with our reusable muslin bag (included) in a shower.

Other products include our most loved Baby Butter, Oat & Calendula Bath, Postpartum Mama Herbal Bath, and our newest Silky Soft Lip Butter.

We love the idea of skincare that extends from mama to child. How do you ensure your products are safe and effective for both users?

After two pregnancies and with my kids being born with eczema, I was determined to opt out of using any steroids. Every ingredient in our products is well researched and serves a specific function. There are never any fillers, parabens, petrolatum, steroids, phthalates or artificial fragrance. Our products are cruelty-free and have only tried and tested on real people, including moms and babies. 

As a Naetal user yourself, what is your favourite skincare ritual that includes your baby?

My favourite ritual would be bathing with my boys using our Oat & Calendula Bath and then doing a little facial with them using our Original Serum as a first step and a Baby Butter after on their cheeks and whole body. I love using Belly Butter on my whole body as it glides on to protect and moisturize my skin. Every morning before leaving home we each have our Silky Soft Lip Butter to keep our lips hydrated. My boys have learned to grab their Baby Butters themselves to apply whenever they feel their skin is dry or itchy.

As Mother’s Day is approaching, can you give us some great Naetal gift ideas?
