These Combs Are Good For The Planet & Your Hair (Win!)

May 29, 2022

Healthy hair and a healthy planet? We got you. Little Moroccan Things is a Brooklyn-based female-owned company founded on the principle of producing high-quality artisanal hair combs made of by-product horns. We chatted with marketing manager Lara Klein to learn more! —Noa Nichol

Hi Lara! When and why was Little Moroccan Things launched? What niche is the brand aiming to fill in the haircare space?

Little Moroccan Things started when the founder, Safaa El Jazouli, decided to quit her corporate job and reconnect with her roots in Morocco. Travelling the country and exploring the rural villages of the Atlas Mountains revived her passion for traditional craftsmanship and transformed it into a dedication to supporting artisans and sharing the best of their crafts with the world. We feature the works of art of talented artisans and connects people with timeless pieces and quality products that will last a lifetime—and more. Our most successful products are decor, jewelry and beauty products. The keratin comb is one of our most popular products.

Tell us more about the products you currently offer and, from a beauty perspective, what makes them unique (not to mention, excellent for healthy hair)?

In the beauty category, we offer beauty products that are made with 100 per cent organic natural ingredients. For instance, our argan oil is from the Atlas mountains in Morocco—one of the best geographic sources of argan oil. The oil is extracted from the argan nuts by female artisans using a traditional mortar that doesn’t heat up the oil. This allows excellent preservation of the nutrients naturally present in argan oil. Our argan oil is one of the richest oils in vitamin E and in antioxidants.

In the same vein, what sort of benefits can we expect to see with use of these combs, in terms of our hair’s appearance and health?

Our keratin combs are naturally rich in keratin, as they are made out of horns. They gently nourish the hair day after day and reduce frizz and static electricity. As keratin is a natural component, our combs should not get in contact with water, and if they do, they should be wiped dry immediately. We recommend using them on dry hair for the best results. Each comb has unique colours and patterns, making it very unique. It’s the perfect beauty accessory to add to a woman or man’s vanity and the perfect gift to a significant other.

How have customers reacted to your products so far?

People love our combs. They tell us they make quick work of detangling, and are faster and more gentle than other combs, even for thick, coarse hair. When used on damaged hair, customers say our keratin combs leave no frizz, and curls that are defined and shiny. One customer bought the comb for her husband who has frizzy puffy hair, he loved it!

Sustainability and ethics are a big part of the brand ethos; can you explain why and how?

The horns we use to make our combs are a by-product of the meat and dairy production farms. They are ethically sourced from sheep and cows bred for the food industry. If our artisans didn’t use the horns to make the combs, they would have otherwise gone to waste.

Please give us your top tips for proper and healthy hair brushing! Top dos and don’ts?

We are advocates for taking care of hair and skin in a gentle way. Small steps can make a big difference and using a keratin comb daily instead of a plastic comb can really make hair—and beards—healthier. We don’t recommend brushing hair when it’s wet, as it’s very fragile and will break easily. We recommend applying argan oil as a weekly pre-shampoo treatment to nourish hair, it will help repair damaged hair and will strengthen it in the long run. And healthy eating! What we eat shows in our hair and skin. Staying hydrated and making sure to get a sufficient intake amount of vitamins and nutrients is key for healthy hair and a healthy body.

My priorities for my hair, only wash 1-2 times per week, use good quality products, if I use ny heat on my hair I apply thermal protection, get it trimmed to get rid of split ends and use conditioner and a good comb. @lebeau5450
