This Period Bathing Suit Is A Summer Game-Changer (Win!)

June 12, 2022

Did you know 65 per cent of women won’t put on their swimwear during their period? And 74 per cent of women have been prevented from swimming because of their menstruation? Well, good news: a new period bathing suit has launched, giving women the freedom to do whatever they want to do on their periods without worrying about tampons or leaks! Vancouver-made, female-founded period underwear brand Rosaseven Lingerie‘s beautiful, sustainable period bathing suit is tried and tested and ready for summer. We chatted with co-founder Miriam Leckenby to learn more! —Noa Nichol

Hi Miriam! When and why did you launch Rosaseven Lingerie?

Rosaseven Lingerie was launched March 2021; however, we began working on it back in May 2020. Rosaseven’s story started through a small LinkedIn ad posted by my co-founder Delphine for a sustainable womenswear designer, which I read all the way in England during Covid lockdown. Having never met in person we worked remotely for the first six months, across two continents and time-zones, bringing together a united view to make a beautiful feminine product that would have a positive impact on the planet, and on women’s periods. Delphine, 40, originally from France had spent 10 years working in a global sports company as a global brand manager and felt at one point she needed to do something that was more meaningful. Taking her love for lingerie and passion for sustainability and combined them together. I left a 10-year career in the corporate fashion world when I realized I was fighting a losing battle for implementing sustainability in large corporate companies. I could no longer produce something that was beautiful on the outside, yet toxic on the inside and destroying our planet.

What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

Our mission is to create period underwear that is protective, comfortable, beautiful and naturally breathable, as well as sustainable. Our goal is to make women look forward to their period and make them feel pretty, elegant and feminine. For this, we have implemented function, beautiful design and sustainability—all in one! We launched with our small but concise range of three different pantie styles: hi-rise, thong and cheeky. As well as our revolutionary products, the period protection bodysuit and night shorts. We have four flow levels across our range, light, moderate, heavy and overnight. As well as our bralette, which co-ordinates with all of our styles, as we wanted to give a matching set option as a lingerie brand. TENCEL Lyocell is our main fibre, blended with organic cotton. The natural breathable and antimicrobial properties of TENCEL Lyocell, as well as being buttery soft made it perfect for our period underwear. All our products are made locally in Vancouver by a talented seamstress and local manufacturer. We produce in small batches to reduce transportation costs, waste and environmental impact. Our point of difference is our feminine design with the natural and sustainable fabrics. Producing in small batches allows us to be agile in our process and adapt our range based on customer needs, this is for example how we launched our additional pantie, Brigitte: our full bum coverage style.

Congrats on launching your new period bathing suit! Why was it so important to you to develop this product?

Who has never had the fear of having a tampon string showing when on the beach and getting out of the water at the pool? Our period bathing suit is giving women the freedom to do whatever they want to do on their periods. Going on vacation, surfing, paddle boarding, and enjoying the beach without paying attention to the time of the month. And taking their kids to their swimming lessons without missing out, or simply feeling free to soak in the hot tub and jump in the pool with their partner or friends! The suit works by absorbing the flow into the absorption gusset and the outer waterproof lining stops any water from getting in. The waterproof lining also stops any leaks when you get out of the water. Made with a fully lined double layer for a nice snug fit, and with a cross-over adjustable straps for a great fit and adaptable to different body lengths and shapes.

There’s also a sustainability component here; tell us about that!

Rosaseven bathing suit is made from recycled polyester with a natural ChitoSante antibacterial treatment. Every bathing suit is saving 10 plastic bottles from landfill and waste streams. As well as reducing the number of tampons and applicators ending up in waste streams, landfills & washed up on the world’s beaches.

Where will you be swimming this summer?!

Being a very happy B.C. resident, I will be surfing in Tofino and swimming in some of our beautiful lakes and rivers this summer, and I can’t wait to explore them in our bathing suit.
