Candles In Summer? Yes! (Win!)

Lighting a cosy candle (or two) in winter is a no-brainer … but what about summer? According to Montreal-based self-care brand Moonday‘s founder, Iseult Savard Lévesque, the warmer months are just as good a time for candles, especially one of Moonday’s new spring/summer editions, Fruit Market and Flower Market. We chatted with Iseult to learn more about “sparking a candle flame” in summer. —Noa Nichol

Hi Iseult! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

Hello! I’m Iseult, I am 23 years old and I am originally from Chibougamau, Quebec (a place far from Montreal). I am rather quiet by nature, but my imagination is  loud and my mind is filled with projects and ideas. 

When and why did you launch Moonday? What niche were/are you aiming to fill? 

This started out as an at-home project during the beginning of the pandemic. I am a very creative person and I wanted to try out something new. I wanted to create a candle that would make me feel a certain way. Make an  item that went beyond smelling good. Something that would make me feel good inside and out and allow me to take a break at any time of the day. 

What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?

We have an array of natural soy-wax candles with fun scents, bath salts, and a few items from local companies that we adore. What makes us unique is how we present our products to the world. How each candle has its own universe whether it’s in the description, the scent or the packaging. We are not afraid to be bold and share our passion with the world. 

Regarding your mission to bring happiness to as many people as possible through your products: how is it going?! 

It is going very well! We are building a community of like-minded individuals known as The Moonday Club. They are genuinely happy to support our company and have our candles, and are proud to wear our merch. We are transparent with our clients and this is part of the happiness journey. Once you trust someone, it’s easier to be happy for the wins or to be supportive in the harder periods. We share everything on a daily basis through “Reels” and TikTok, spotlighting the ups and downs of having a business and just the reality of being a human on this planet. 

You recently launched two new candles for summer; can you tell us about them, and the inspiration behind them?

Flower Market and Fruit Market are the perfect duo! The inspiration comes from our weekly walks to our local market. It reminds us of the warmth that the summer season brings. Our Fruit Market candle is topped with five wax raspberries, and the Flower market candle with five delicate wax flowers. We wanted to be able to offer our customers little pieces of the local markets we walk by every other day. We also wanted to create a candle as grand as our bestseller, which is our Good Morning candle. As one of our fan favourites and best-selling candles, Good Morning is the reason we are here today. Its aesthetic put us on the map: not many companies had this type of topping at the time (five colourful fruity loops).

People tend to think of candles as something to burn in fall/winter, when the weather cools; why are they actually great year-round? 

This is a great question! Our candles are great year-around as you can create your ideal environment at any moment. It could be -20 degrees outside, but if you light a Give Me a Break candle (coconut & lime) you are instantly transported on a beach with a cocktail. If you are looking for a breath of fresh air on a hot and humid day, you could light the Arctic Breeze (eucalyptus & lavender) candle and your mind will cool down. 

Top summer candle burning tips?

1. Never leave your candle next to a window as this might change the colour. 
2. If you see that it has melted a little on the top, pop it in the fridge for a minute or two. 
3. As always, trim the wick and enjoy!

Final, tough question: your very favourite can’t-live-without Moonday candle is? 

It will forever be the Good Morning candle.
