The Flying Pig has become a favourite dining spot since opening in 2011, but that can mean long (but well-worth it) waits for a table.
If you have only a few precious minutes at lunchtime, The Side Door at The Flying Pig is now open at the Gastown location. Here, the same goodness found at the restaurant is available for take out, from feature sandwiches ($7) and three pea soup ($4) to quinoa salad a la grecque ($10) and hand carved ham and swiss samba ($7). Ingredients are seasonal, so menu changes are not uncommon.
Two long communal tables are open for those who want to stay, and beautiful sliding barn doors give a sneak peek into the restaurant next door. Large party catering is offered, and a self-contained kitchen at the back allows for private cooking classes (prices available upon request) with Chef Erik Heck, too.
No long waits here, but well-worth it just the same. —May Globus
