Have you heard? LUSH is giving Vitamin Daily subscribers the chance to win $5,000 for their favourite charity! It’s our #CharityofChoice Contest, on till October 1st, and you can enter to win here.
In launching this contest, we started thinking: what would our #CharityofChoice be? On a summer roadtrip to Chase, in B.C.’s Interior, I visited the non-profit Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society, which takes in neglected, abused and unwanted donkeys from around the province and gives them a permanent, loving home. I was surprised to learn that the average lifespan of a donkey is 50 years, making this rescue effort particularly important and poignant—imagine living five decades of your life in sorry circumstances! Not OK for humans, and not OK for donkeys.
During my walkabout (which, yes, involved a lot of nose rubs and nuzzles), I was also told that Turtle Valley had recently purchased and was all set to move to a larger, better farm. Their hope to build a new barn that could house all 60 of their donkeys under one roof, however, depended on the kindness of strangers. Checking their website, it seems they have not yet reached their goal. A $5,000 donation, I’m sure, would really make a difference.
Other interesting facts about donkeys:
> They’re super stubborn … as a mule, in fact. It’s mostly about safety
> They don’t like to live alone, but one donkey will get along just fine in a herd of goats
> Their large ears actually help to keep them cool
> Like elephants, they have incredible memories
> Unlike horses, their coats aren’t waterproof. That’s why they need a dry and cosy barn for shelter from the rain
Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society would be my #CharityofChoice—what’s yours? Let us know, and you could win $5,000 toward your favourite good cause. —Noa Glouberman
