September 23, 2022

Fall is officially here, an ideal season for us Canucks to connect with nature and explore our backyard. This season’s hiking comes with refreshing benefits such as enjoying the crisp weather, dynamic foliage, and wildlife sightings due to less busy trails. For everyone from mountain regulars to brisk walkers, bringing the right gear is the key to staying safe and warm. With so many outdoor brands making environmental commitments and stylish statements, we’ve put together a roundup of 10 hiking gear go-tos this fall. —Julia Dumbrell

The trusty Torrentshell Jacket from Patagonia ($189) checks all the boxes: breathable, durable, Fair Trade Certified, and now available in bright new colours.

Pulling inspiration from classic Canadian outdoor wear, the Good for Sunday Recycled Polar Fleece Pullover ($145) uses broken down polyester, making it uber-soft and ethically produced in Toronto.

The MEC Rad Pants 51 ($90) are stylish yet functional, featuring cuffs, an integrated belt and extra pockets. With 30 years of outdoor ‘cred’, MEC spruced their Rad Pants up for the season by using a more sustainable fabric.

Lululemon’s Wunder Puff Cropped Vest ($228) just dropped in four fab new colours. The vest is known for being wonderfully warm, water-repellent and chic.

A must for fall hiking, the Peakfreak II Mid OutDry boots ($180) from Columbia are made with Adapt Trax outsole system, designed to propel hikers forward on inclines and prevent slipping on the way down.

We’re loving Smartwool’s Full Cushion Alpine Perch Crew Socks ($31). They’re made with Merino wool to protect each adventurer’s feet on the trails and available in a range of designs.

The Rho Lightweight Wool Toque from Vancouver-based Arc’teryx ($40) is a high-performance must-have. Made with Merino wool, the hat is breathable and stays warm (even when wet)!

Be one-of-a-kind with the Cotopaxi Kapai Hip Pack ($35), available at MEC. Sustainably designed in eye-catching colours, it’s the perfect lightweight pack for a fall hike.

Check out the new Limited Edition ‘Sky Scrapes’ collection of the Eddy®+ Water Bottle ($35) from Camelbak. The bottles are insulated and stainless steel to keep hikers hydrated.

The Cosmo 350 Headlamp from Black Diamond ($35) is a fall hiking essential as the sun sets earlier. This season, Black Diamond launched a special edition collab with The Venture Outside Project to shed a light on diversity in the outdoor community.
