From the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to Anna Wintour’s romantic stroll, gardens have long captured our imaginations as a means to express creativity and cultivate opulence. With just the earth at our fingerstips, anyone can create something beautiful with the right amount of time and patience. Which is why, when the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) asked us which film screening we’d like to sponsor this year, Rosie Stapel’s Portrait of a Garden immediately rose to the top.
In this thoughtful documentary set on a centuries-old Dutch estate, we see owner Daan van der Have and and his 85-year-old pruning master, Jan Freriks, working passionately and painstakingly on perfecting the fruit trees and crops in the kitchen garden.
From Jans’ words of wisdom to the garden’s dazzling array of plants, Portrait of a Garden is a quiet ode to gardeners, accompanied by beautiful music by Jozef van Wissem.
As the program says: See it for the education, for the beauty, for the experience of observing the shifts in nature over time. And the rewards we reap when we stop to enjoy it. —VITA Daily
