This year’s summer festival season opener is Luminato (June 19th to 28th), and we can’t wait to take it all in! Here, our top can’t-miss event picks:
1. Party in a decommissioned generating station into the wee hours of the morning. Dance to electronic and experimental music at the Canadian premiere of the Unsound Festival, June 19th and 20th.
2. David Byrne’s Contemporary Color show, June 22nd to 23rd, is a large-scale spectacle that will fill the Air Canada Centre with serious star power (think Nelly Furtado, Kelis, St. Vincent, the Beastie Boys and more).
3. Indie film lovers can watch (and actually participate in using their mobile devices) the world premiere of My One Demand, a live, interactive piece about unrequited love filmed in Toronto in a single, continuous shot.
4. Catch Art in Transit while waiting for the subway—10-second silent video postcards created by artists from all over the world, who have never been to Toronto (their imagined vision of the city may surprise you).
5. Relax in the Garden of Light, a lush (and fully-licensed) indoor green space at David Pecaut Square and the Festival Hub. We’re looking forward to enjoying cabaret, music and surprises—and, of course, chowing down on South American-inspired dishes and drinks courtesy of Parts & Labour.
There’s also a Brazilian block party, a Cuban dance troupe, an indigenous Pan-American food festival and Jason Collett’s Basement Revue. Trust us, this is one 10-day party you won’t want to miss! —Amanda Nunes
