5 Jewish Jewelry Pieces Our Editor Loves

October 29, 2023

Antisemitism exists; we didn’t need Kanye to confirm it. But the Jewish people are resilient, and have survived (again and again and again) all manners of attack thanks, in part, to the pride they take in their culture and religion. For our own editor-in-chief, adorning her person with gorgeous and highly symbolic jewelry is a way to wear, literally, her heart and faith on her sleeve. Here, her top current picks—precious ways to rock Judaism! —Vita Daily

The Star of David (in Hebrew, Magen David, or Shield of David), is a Jewish symbol composed of two overlaid equilateral triangles that form a six-pointed star. It appears on synagogues, Jewish tombstones and the flag of the State of Israel. From Anzie, this diamond-covered Love Letter Diamond Star of David Pendant Necklace ($850 at Nordstrom) glows with a meaningful shine.

The Hamsa (also known as Khamsa) is a hand-shaped amulet used for protection (from evil, jealousy, etc.) by both Jewish and Muslim people. Its name comes from a Semitic root and literally means “five”. The Hamsa is usually shaped in the form of a symmetrical hand, with thumbs on both side. From Leah Alexandra, this Hamsa Necklace ($155) boasts sapphires and moonstones set in 14k gold vermeil, on a gold-filled chain.

In Judaism, and other cultures, the evil eye may be warded off by wearing, well, an evil eye. The Evil Eye Drop Hoop ($42) from The Perfect Hoop doubles as a protective charm. It features a dainty hoop earring with a crystal encrusted evil eye charm. You can wear this drop hoop earring as a statement on its own, or paired with The Evil Eye Huggie for a simple, yet sparkling stack.

Het-Yud spells the word Chai (חי), usually pronounced like the English word “hi” or “high,” which is a word and symbol that means “life.” In fact, a common Jewish toast “L’Chaim!,” which means, “To Life!” is often said at celebrations in anticipation of all the good things to come. This hand-made Chai Necklace ($114) by Etsy seller Etaymalka is minimalist in the best possible way, and available in a choice of materials.

Red string bracelets have been worn throughout history and cultures, including Judaism, as a symbol of protection, faith, good luck, strength and connection. Dior’s Oui Bracelet ($1,150) in yellow gold and dialong and with a red cord, puts a loose-but-luxe spin on this custom.
