With all the buzz about Liquidity wine at the 2015 Cornucopia Food and Wine Festival in Whistler (their 2013 Chardonnay was a Top 25 winner), we decided a winter trip to wine country was in order to see this stunning modern tasting room and bistro nestled in the rolling hills of Okanagan Falls.
A 15-minute drive from the Penticton airport (and neighbor to another favourite, Blue Mountain Winery) Liquidity Wines was acquired in 2009 by a group from Calgary, including the fashion industry veteran Ian MacDonald, who served as lead visionary on the redesign.
Also an artist, MacDonald has curated an impressive art collection for the tasting room and surrounding property that includes work by such local luminaries as Martha Sturdy and Brent Comber. But foremost in the vision are the picture windows, from tasting room and bistro (which opened in 2013), looking out over bucolic vistas of mountains, lake and vines.
We nestled into the Paul Smith-style striped banquette and dug into potted terrine with grilled sourdough and pickled cucumber, and a hearty fish stew served in a cast iron pot to pair with the Liquidity pinot noir, with its notes of spice and violet. Come spring, we’ll be choosing an airy corner table with 180 degree views, and enjoying the bright flavours of the local larder with a crisp glass of rosé.— Sarah Bancroft
