Hi Sydney and Ali! Please tell us a bit about yourselves to start.

We’re sisters who love all things design and lifestyle! Growing up in the world of construction our favorite family hobby was watching HGTV and playing on a construction site. I, Sydney, always had retail jobs growing up and it has been a childhood dream of mine to own a store of my own one day. Ali has always had an eye for design and knew she wanted to pursue it as a career. Merging our backgrounds, we created a destination for all things home and lifestyle. Curato, meaning “Curated” in Italian, is a nod to our roots as well as our distinctly Modern Californian aesthetic.

When and why did you launch Curato? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

We launched Curato in the Spring of 2021, during lock down I (Sydney), had lost my job of four years in tech due to COVID layoffs and Ali had just graduated school and was studying interior design. In what felt like a very uncertain and scary period of my life something amazing and life changing was born for both of us. Ali had just gotten her first interior design project and when trying to source pieces we didn’t find pieces that resonated with our sense of style. Together we pooled our different backgrounds and decided to start an online business with a seasonal store to represent our Modern Cali-Cool aesthetic. We felt that a one stop shop was missing from the Canadian online marketplace as well as Toronto/Muskoka where we have opened up two seasonal shops. We wanted Curato to be a destination where you could shop for yourself, your home as well as a gift for your “Mother-in-law” with any price point in mind.

What products/services do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?

We offer a curated range of furniture, home decor, and women’s clothing and accessories. We have a full-service interior design leg of our business but we specialize and love styling our clients homes. Our clients love the styling aspect as sometimes they want to refresh their space but don’t have a budget for a full renovation. We work with them to use what they already have and bring in new pieces whether it’s furniture and accessories to help warm up and modernize their space.

Tell us about the process of choosing just the right items to offer on your website/in store.

We spend countless hours sourcing a curated collection of products for our business. We truly don’t carry anything we personally don’t love ourselves. Pretty much everything ends up in our homes and closets but that is why our clients trust our opinions so much. It is very important to us that the partners we work with keep the core values we carry. We’re always looking to support local artisans, women owned and operated businesses and manufacturers that put sustainability first.

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and we hear you’re terrific at curating gift guides; what goes into choosing the perfect gift for an occasion?

We believe you really have to love the gift you’re giving. The key to giving the perfect gift is making sure there is a personal connection to the item you’re gifting. Does your significant other love dogs? Our ‘Resident Dog’ coffee table book is a perfect addition to their space. Does your person love a nighttime routine to relax and unwind?
