We think this new Japanese-inspired vegetarian café by Mayumi Bae is… so bae.
Nearly everything at The Workshop Vegetarian Café is homemade: from yeast bread and kombucha squash soup to baked goods and even handcrafted ramen noodles. Shouldn’t ramen broth be simmered for hours in meat, you ask? Fear not, co-owner Hakuto Yamanaka combined his Japanese culinary skills at Hapa Izakaya and vegetarian resourcefulness from Harvest Community Foods to come up with hearty and healthy soup bases—even the miso paste is made from chickpeas, not soy! If we had to recommend the most unique lunch, try the vegan Organic Spicy Tan Tan Ramen made with butternut sesame broth, sip on the city’s only Organic Yuzu Ginger Latte, and finish with a Matcha Mochi Cake. The Workshop’s rustic wooden interiors are sprinkled with turquoise bar stools and mini succulents, creating an intimate and homey space.
This hyper local café won’t be expanding to Vancouver proper anytime soon, “We wanted the community to come to us,” said Mayumi. Trust us, it’s worth crossing the bridge for. —Miranda Sam
