How To Make Homemade Caramel Popcorn With An Adult Twist

April 7, 2023

Bet you didn’t know, today is Caramel Popcorn Day! Most likely created by a snack-maker, we’ll celebrate all the same! Here’s a recipe for making homemade caramel popcorn, along with some suggestions for adding an adult twist. —Vita Daily

  • 10 cups of popped popcorn (plain, unsalted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • Salt to taste

Preheat your oven to 250°F. Spread the popcorn on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt, and stir until everything is combined. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Once the mixture comes to a boil, let it cook for about 5 minutes without stirring. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the baking soda (this will cause the mixture to foam). Pour the caramel mixture over the popcorn and toss to coat evenly. Bake the popcorn in the preheated oven for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Remove the popcorn from the oven and let it cool completely before serving.

To give your caramel popcorn an adult twist, you can try some of these suggestions:

  • Add some spices: Try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or some ground cinnamon to the caramel mixture for a spicy or sweet flavor kick.
  • Mix in some nuts: Chop up some almonds, pecans, or walnuts and mix them in with the caramel-coated popcorn before baking for some added crunch and flavor.
  • Drizzle with chocolate: Once the popcorn has cooled, melt some dark chocolate and drizzle it over the top for a decadent treat.
  • Add some booze: Mix a tablespoon or two of your favorite liquor (such as whiskey, rum, or amaretto) into the caramel mixture before pouring it over the popcorn for a boozy twist.
  • Make it savoury: Skip the sugar and instead mix some melted butter, salt, and your favourite seasonings (such as garlic powder, onion powder, or dried herbs) into the popcorn before baking for a savoury snack.
