As interior-design essentials, our house plants could not be happier that it’s spring. In addition to making any space look chic and lively, house plants are proven to improve our mood and focus while lowering stress, anxiety and fatigue. Our favourite part of plant ownership is the rewarding experience of seeing our plants thrive, finding a new leaf sprout from a Monstera, or watching as our Snake Plant grows taller each day. With warmer and sunnier weather, now is the time for plant moms to up their plant care with a few simple tips. —Julia Dumbrell
Safe Succulents
For those who are just starting out, finding safe plants which are less finicky is a key to boosting any plant mom’s confidence. Succulents will give all the benefits of being a plant mom without the stress of watering. With an array of cacti available at Home Depot, we recommend the Snake Plant, known for growing tall with no attention needed ($20). Our key tip with succulents is to leave them alone as much as possible, making sure to only give them a drink when they really need it.
Once-a-Week Waterers
Some of the most impressive-looking plants only require water once a week. Our favourite low-maintenance plant in this category would be the Monstera, available at IKEA ($60). Monsteras are resilient and impressive looking, and will grow quickly indoors or outdoors with just a little bit of love. Our tip for these types of plants is to get a can that inspires weekly watering. We recommend the IKEA Vattenkrasse, designed to look so good we’d happily leave it on display when not using it ($12).
Invest in a Show-Stopper
Being able to take care of a more finicky plant is truly an achievement. We have deep admiration for those who invest in living room fillers like the Bird of Paradise. With the right amount of water and sunlight, these plants promise to bring a sense of creativity and satisfaction to any room.If investing in a show-stopping plant, our recommendation is to shop according to the home. If it is a bright corner in need of some life, the Bird of Paradise available on Frondly is sure to thrive ($150). If the corner is away from the window and slightly chillier, consider filling the area with a low-light plant, such as the Ivy plant on Frondly, to set this show-stopper up for success ($25).
