Brighten Up Your Space With This “Renter-Friendly” Wallpaper Collab (Win!)

April 27, 2023

We’re done with drab walls, and you can be, too! Otto Studio, a Vancouver-based removable wallpaper and decal company with art-forward designs in bright and bold colours, have partnered with artist Tierney Milne on a new series that’s sure to bring new life to your space. Tierney talked to us about the collab, and we’re giving you a chance to win! —Vita Daily

Hi Tierney! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start!

I’m a designer and mural artist working out of Vancouver, BC and I absolutely love using colour, grids and bold shapes to bring joy to viewers and spaces.

You have collaborated with Otto Studio on a a bright and colourful new removable wallpaper capsule collection; can you tell us about the range, and the inspiration behind your designs?

For sure! Nostalgic Play + Bold shapes and Geometric Structure are the biggest things that drive my art and this capsule collection specifically. Kaleidoscopic shapes and arrays of simple forms have been pieced together in various compositions and scales, each with their own amount of playfulness or sophistication depending on the colourway. In addition to the scattered candy-like compositions of geometric forms, I was so excited to include modernized organic textured designs that really speak to nostalgic touchstones from my childhood and the Vancouver greenery around me. My take on the composition book cover texture, for example, is inspired by a life-long love of doodling in the retro notebooks, while the ‘blob’ designs aim to stylize and reference mottled water surfaces and endless pebbles collected on walks around the forest and beach. While I am drawn primarily to gem-tones and retro pops of saturation, the collection also includes more muted and calming colour ways to give as much range as possible to mix and match and choose which colours bring you the most joy.

What made this partnership a perfect fit for you, personally and as an artist?

It was a thrill to partner with Otto and be able to create an array of designs and patterns instead of limiting myself to one style or colour treatment. My work is usually forced to either be very playful or very elegant, and it was incredibly freeing on both a personal and a professional level to not pigeon-hole myself and allow the capsule to be as accessible as possible in its variations. I love decorating my walls with colours and keeping the play alive, but am super indecisive—so these seemed to be the perfect fit for both me as a consumer and a designer.

We love that this wallpaper is called “renter friendly”; what makes it so?

The wallpaper is “renter friendly” as it is printed onto a very high quality textured vinyl that is completely removable and easy to apply, removing the stress and hassle of painting or applying more permanent wallpaper solutions. I love that you can easily take them down and shift them or switch up the patterns as well, it’s super freeing!

For those a little shy when it comes to colour, how and why would you encourage them to try these designs in their own space?

Covering an entire wall or room can be intimidating (and more expensive) if you’re just wanting to dip your foot int the re-design pond. I personally love the idea of selecting intentional or small areas to highlight with the wallpaper and give a pop if fun. Start with a small area to see how you like it, maybe a self-contained area or nook etc, so that you can get a feel for it without feeling overwhelmed with the process. To me, it doesn’t matter how big of a space you want to cover, but even a small intentional area covered in patterns can have a huge relative impact. Do what makes you happy!

Trend wise, how do you see colour’s role evolving when it comes to both art and design/home decor?

I’m not too sure! To me, colour is less of a trend and more of a life-long fixation and cornerstone of my personal work and client mural work. I think injecting colour into your space is a timeless way to influence your mental state and subtly shift your mood in a way that brings you and your guests joy. Ultimately I love to use colour as a tool to help support a mood that you’re trying to create.

Finally, personal question: how do you bring joy, colour and fun into your own home?

My home is very chaotic and colourful with lots of vibrant trinkets and snippets mixed together. I love collecting odds and ends and nostalgic baubles, usually pairing them with bold textiles and patterns wherever possible. I find I’m most inspired when my brain and eyes are surrounded by an eye-spy of playful things that bring me joy.
