May 26 is National Chardonnay Day, so let’s celebrate what may well be the world’s most popular wine. Numerous countries make it, and the flavour profile ranges from creamy and buttery to crisp and clean depending on method and soil the grape is grown in. Here, seven of our favourites, from B.C., France, Napa Valley and more. —Catherine Dunwoody
Haywire 2021 Chardonnay has a minerality often found in wines from the Okanagan region, try this with oysters or roasted halibut.
Bread & Butter Chardonnay Napa 2021 is a favourite from the valley, with it’s cool climate and long growing season. Aged in oak barrels, this is nice with grilled seafood or roasted chicken.
From the north Naramata Bench, BC’s Coolshanagh Chardonnay has hints of Asian pear, nutmeg, caramel, orange zest, and roasted almonds. Available only at the winery, so stock up next visit.
Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay Columbia Valley 2021 is an affordable, favourite wine from one of Washington’s favourite wineries. Flavors of apple, hazelnut, and vanilla and perfect with a Cobb salad.
Peter Lehmann The Barossan Chardonnay 2021 is from Australia’s Barossa Valley, full-bodied with hints of peach, honeydew and caramel. Very nice with chicken and grilled vegetables.
McWatters Collection 2020 Chardonnay uses grapes that are hand-sorted then whole bunch pressed from two different vineyards in Osoyoos. 100% barrel fermented with 20% new French oak.
Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Les Ursulines Chardonnay 2022 is done in the classic Burgundian style with grapes sourced from the Côte d’Or region. Crisp and refreshing, delightful with shellfish or creamy pastas.
