BC Farmers’ Market season is in full swing, with the return of over 145 markets across the province all summer long. Locals and tourists looking for free, fun, and family-friendly excursions can find fresh, local, in season food and discover new, up-and-coming businesses, artists, artisans and much more at their nearest farmers’ market.
Using the BC Farmers’ Market Trail, visitors can sort and find markets by name, region, community, or other key features for a truly farm-to-table shopping experience that showcases the best of any given city. After all, what better way to explore the diverse regions of BC than through locally grown food and handcrafted goods?! To get you started, we’ve rounded up a list of the top markets to check out this summer across the province:
Coquitlam Farmers’ Market: The ultimate kid-friendly farmers’ market destination! The Coquitlam Farmers’ Market is one of the longest-running farmers’ markets in Metro Vancouver – and for good reason. With 70+ vendors participating at each weekly market, there is no shortage of tasty treats and fresh produce to be found. This year, they are also running two educational children’s programs: the Power of Produce (POP), aimed at children 5-12 to teach them about local food systems, nutrition, the importance of buying local produce through fun activities and the Two Bite Club which encourages kids to try a new featured fruit or vegetable weekly. Bonus: these kids programs are also running at the Port Moody Farmers’ Market all summer long!
Sechelt Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market: Hyper-local food and art await at the Sechelt Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market, the largest outdoor market on the Sunshine Coast. With over 60 vendors participating each week, you’ll find everything from fresh seafood to craft beer, garden-fresh produce to baked goods, and so much more. Centrally located and dog friendly, this market is truly a ‘must visit’!
Steveston Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market: The Steveston Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market (SFAM) in Richmond is one of the newer markets on our list, but not for lack of impact. This volunteer-run market is located in historic Steveston, and all funds raised by the SFAM support activities and projects of the Steveston Community Centre, including the Steveston Water Park and playground. Find local vendors like Bali Bites, Jane’s Honey Bees and Living Lotus Chocolate, just to name a few.
Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market: Heading to Vancouver Island this summer? Stop by Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market just north of Nanaimo and get a taste of some of the region’s most talented makers, bakers, and growers every Saturday morning. Offering a true community feel, this morning market features a multitude of vendors displaying their fresh farm produce alongside up-and-coming independent food producers and small businesses. If you visit, make sure to check out Van Isle Wild, a grower, forager and producer of foods unique to Vancouver Island that have been ethically grown in the wildest ways possible!
New West Farmers’ Market: This is another community market full of family-oriented activities. Found close to Tipperary Park, the New West Farmers’ Market showcases the city’s small-town vibes amidst a stunning backdrop of green space alongside the Fraser River. In addition to live music and fresh seasonal produce, the New West Market will also be hosting Sprout Club from mid-June to August, a free educational program for children 5-12 to teach them about food security, nutrition, and the environment!
The Artisan & Farmers Market in Chilliwack: Formerly the Eco Market, Chilliwack’s Artisan & Farmers Market offers a close-knit community feel featuring local growers, makers, and bakers. From seasonal fruit and veggies to artisan cheeses and homemade breads, this lively market is a family-friendly stop situated in Chilliwack’s picturesque Sardis Park. With activities for kids, live music, and even yoga and tai chi classes, this market has something for everyone. Oh, and did we mention it’s dog friendly and wheelchair accessible?
