3 Thrifted, Found & Free Straw Bags For Summer

June 19, 2023

Have you seen them? Beautiful, designer, straw bags gracing the glossy pages of your favourite magazines. Have you seen the hefty price tag that goes along with them? A straw bag doesn’t have to be designer or cost as much as a month’s rent to be beautiful. In fact, the best way to shop this summer trend won’t cost you much money at all. If you’re really lucky, it may even be free! So, just where should you be looking for a more affordable version of this trend? I’m here to help. —Jen Pistor

Bag 1: The Small Round Crossbody Bag

This bag style has grown to popularity over the past few years. It’s compact, but does allow room for your essentials and even your phone. It’s a bag that will make even your simplest Summer outfit instantly more chic.  I sourced this bag on secondhand resale app, Poshmark. Simply type in “Round Straw Bag” into their search and see hundreds of listings come up. I found some stunning options starting as low as $12.

Bag 2: The Vintage Picnic Tote

This bag I found for free. Free!  My MIL had a pile of things she was getting rid of and this 1970s straw tote was in the to go pile. I gasped then ran over and scooped up the bag. She was thrilled that I wanted it and happily gifted it to me. The earthy tones are perfection and lend this bag to be carried well into the fall. This was the bag she used to carry picnics in when my husband was little. Not only is this bag beautiful, classic, and on trend, it carries family memories. Family can be a wonderful way to acquire quality vintage pieces.

Bag 3: The Backpack

I snatched up this beauty on a recent trip to the thrift shop. There were actually dozens of fun straw bags to choose from hanging in the purse section. At first glance the bag looked broken as one the straps was undone and hanging strangely. After a quick examination and re-buckling the straps, I found the bag to be in practically perfect condition and for under $10. At the thrift shop it is important to take your time. Not just to ensure the quality, but to make sure you aren’t passing on something that looks odd the way it’s displayed but is actually completely wonderful.
