Movember Wines

November 18, 2016

The infamous Movember is upon us, and we are yet again submerged into the rapture of beards, testosterone, and all things male-health related, with two heavy weights of emphasis below the belt. Wine might relish in a reputation of class and elegance, but rest assured it can grow some hair on your chest, and knock you on your ass if you aren’t careful. If you like a wine that packs a punch, these varietals can make you feel bold, or teach you a lesson, depending on how you drink them. So fill up your cups, book your prostate exam, and hold on to your beards! —Laura Starr

Sagrantino

Known as one of the most tannic grapes that can be grown, this Italian varietal is known for its inky, almost black colour, and its powerful, robust flavour. From the region of Umbria, a Sagrantino will boast very dark fruit flavours, with spicy, earthy characteristics, huge tannins, and very high alcohol content (upwards of 16%). Sagrantino needs to be aged, to soften out the tannins, which makes this wine an excellent gift for wine lovers. Look for the names Antonelli, Scacciadiavoli, and Tenute Lunelli.

Tannat 5

Tannat

This tricky varietal follows closely behind Sagrantino on the tannic scale, but when carefully cultivated, it creates enormous, juicy, dark wines, again with big tannins, and high alcohol content. Not for the weak, this grape needs to be drunk with food, and that food needs to be a big, fatty steak. Though originally from France, California is running fast with this varietal. Look for Tablas Creek vineyard, from California. They are huge champions of this varietal, and make a 100% Tannat wine that garners first-rate accolades.

Zinfandel

A more recognized varietal, Zinfandels are revered for their dark, candied fruit flavours, and smoky, tobacco finish. The grape is naturally high in sugar, which allows for high alcohol content. So when these wines are made right, you have just an explosion of bold flavours, balanced with high acidity, round tannins, and high alcohol (which can add body and texture to the wine). Ridge, a California producer, makes outstanding Zins. Snag a bottle of their East Bench, and remember to share it with a friend, because at 15%, you will feel this in the morning!
