How To Be A Sustainable Barbie

July 15, 2023

The new, upcoming Barbie movie has us all buzzing about Barbie and inspiring us to find our own inner Barbie. The Barbie the world needs right now is Sustainable Barbie. Sustainable Barbie loves to support local, ethical brands. Sustainable Barbie spends her shopping days at thrift shops and loves a good swap with friends. You can find her wearing secondhand clothes and fabulous vintage finds and she’s a big fan of outfit repeating. She’s showing the next generation just how cool being sustainable is.  She wears pink but thinks green. Want some tips on how you can be a Sustainable Barbie?

  1. Seek out natural fabrics when shopping new or thrifted.  Sustainable Barbie knows that organic cotton, linen, wool, Tencel, hemp, and silk will all break back down into the Earth. She skips the synthetic as much as she can.
  2. Sustainable Barbie always asks herself,  “Will I wear this at least 30 times?” when shopping new or thrift.  It’s said that most of us will wear a garment only 5-7 times. Longevity and rewearing our clothes over and over again is always best practice.
  3. Sustainable Barbie knows what’s in her closet and recommends you check your closet before you go shopping.  Do inventory. Have you ever got it in your head that you need a new white tee only to go home and discover that you have one already with the tags on?  Don’t worry Barbie, we’ve all done it. Keeping your closet tidy and organized along with doing inventory at the beginning of each season will help save you from over purchasing.
  4. Do the mental math.  Sustainable Barbie likes to see how many outfits can be made out of that one item. When bringing a new or new-to-you piece into your wardrobe, work out just how many looks you can and will make with that item.  This will bring down your cost per wear.
  5. Be realistic. Sustainable Barbie knows herself and is sure of her personal style. She shops for the lifestyle she has.  Sure she could wear a cocktail dress to the grocery store if she wants to but with her daily life of momming, walking the dog, working, running errands, taking kids to soccer, and all the things she has to do in a day, she skips the sartorial fantasy version of herself and opts for items that help her feel comfortable, confident, as well as beautiful as she moves through her day.
