The Honda Celebration of Light has two more upcoming dates on July 26 and 29. Originally known as the Symphony of Fire, this is the longest-running off-shore fireworks festival in the world. We were invited to tour the fireworks barge. Here are a few highlights from the tour and from the festival in general. —Bronwyn Lewis
Rain or Shine: Kelly Guille of Archangel Fireworks explained that no matter the weather, with his skilled crew, the fireworks will go off. In the case of rain, the mortars are covered with tarps and each individual explosive is covered with plastic.
Competition Parameters: The mortars come in a range of sizes, from individual roman candles to others so big they engulf the barge when they explode. The visiting teams all utilize the same set up but are allowed to bring any special items that they require.
Live Performances: From 2-8pm in Morton Park there will be live performances by singers and bands in collaboration the Consulates of each competing country. At 7:40 pm, the Red Bull Air Show will perform in the skies.
Ticketed Eats: Those watching from Inukshuk Point will have a special menus inspired by the competing countries. The Mexican menu will have slow-roasted pork shoulder with rice, tortilla, and corn salad. The Filipino menu will feature grilled chicken Inasal with Sinangag rice, and vegetable salad.
