3 Ways To Support First Nations Youth & Families

August 21, 2023

September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. This year, the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society is inviting us all to learn about Canada’s history in the spirit of truth and reconciliation, reflect on the legacy of the residential school system and take action. Here are some ways in which you can take steps toward Truth and Reconciliation and show your support for First Nations youth and their families on September 30. —Vita Daily

Wear Orange: Take action by wearing an orange shirt and a pair of Spirit Bear socks to honour the thousands of survivors of residential schools. All Spirit Bear Socks proceeds go toward supporting child and youth-led reconciliation-based events and initiatives.

Watch: Turn on your TV and watch a Spirit Bear film, stop-motion movies based on the books to learn more about truth and reconciliation. The films are voiced by Indigenous and non-Indigenous children, youth and adults. They will be available for free during the week leading up to September 30.

Colour: Spend time with your kids colouring a Caring Society colouring sheet. You can teach your little ones the importance of Orange Shirt Day and post their work on your fridge as a reminder.
