Amy Beavington’s journey as a medium began in childhood. Today, she has her own business, and thousands of followers on Instagram who trust her to demystify the spiritual. We chatted with Beavington (a.k.a. The Modern Medium) to find out a little bit more about life after death, mindfulness and motherhood. (Also: are ghosts watching us when we have sex?) —Sierra Riley
When did you know you had a gift? What made you decide to start a career in mediumship?
From listening to Spirit as a guide in my childhood to seeing Spirit around myself and others, as time went on, I came to realize my experiences weren’t perceived by most as “normal”. So, I pushed it away out of fear and lack of understanding in my teens and early twenties. After I had my first child, I experienced a large emotional shift, as you do after giving birth. I started to see and feel Spirit around on the daily again, just as I did when I was a child […] To my surprise, what Spirit said applied incredibly to the lives of those I shared the messages with. I didn’t fully understand it back then, however, I knew something bigger than me or what I could comprehend at the time was going on […] Once I accepted it, it just made sense that I give into it. It didn’t feel like I had a choice, it was what was supposed to happen for me. I slowly leaned into it, working evenings and weekends outside of my full-time job, reducing hours at my full-time job and working more in my mediumship. I found the more I did my medium work, the more fulfilled and happier I was. Now, I am lucky enough to work full time as a medium, as my most authentic self.
How has your mindfulness practice influenced your spiritual work?
My Spiritual work has influenced my mindfulness and my mindfulness influences how I connect with Spirit right back. To me, mindfulness is more: mind-less-ness. Less thinking, more feeling. […] Seeing it as “mindlessness” and allowing yourself to enjoy each moment. Looking at things with innocence, and with no expectations is what the practice of mindfulness means to me. Because that’s what I do when I connect with Spirit.
As a mother, are there times when you would prefer to “turn off” your ability?
As a mother, I have rules with Spirit that provide structure for how and when Spirit is allowed to connect with me; when I am with my children is one of them. The experience of being a medium is like holding an umbrella when it’s raining: it’s always there, but it cannot rain on you unless you lose control of your umbrella. […] When I am with my children, I am generally “turned off” and engaging with my spiritual journey as a mother.
Has a spirit ever appeared to you at a very inconvenient/funny moment?
All. The. Time. […] You know when you are already having a bad day, and then you bump into a door on your way and you’re like, “Really?!” Then, imagine Spirit popping up and being like, “Oh hey, is now a good time to talk?” It can be annoying. However, I keep Spirit at bay as necessary but it’s harder when you are already irritated. I get asked a lot of questions about Spirit being around during ‘intimate’ moments. The short answer is no, they don’t watch private moments of intimacy, however, they do know when your vibration changes, happy, sad or otherwise.
How has social media helped you find the humour in this line of work?
Finding the humour in every situation is essential to me. [It] stops needless overthinking […] Spirit is like us, they laugh, they smile, they have a sense of humour. As part of my purpose as a medium, approaching Spiritually with a lightheartedness and a sense of humour has always been important to me. Social media has helped me convey that. While what I do is serious business, taking things lightly is the best way to approach spirituality and it helps me to remove ego from it when we connect through fun.
What are a few wellness practices you keep?
For me, wellness is about listening to what my body tells me I need and carving out the time for me in these forms:
- Cleaning: Everything is energy. It is a wellness practice to form good relationships with your space and with items in your home […] I give my stuff and my space the attention it deserves because it is what I am surrounded by, which affects me. I must feel positive about where I am and what I am surrounded by—my space must feel sacred.
- Eating: How you feed yourself is a Spiritual practice. I romanticize food. Cooking and eating is meditative to me. If you are eating something you don’t have a positive relationship with, it won’t do you any good. […] My rule is, everything I eat I must enjoy, I must be present, I must be proud and I must be grateful.
- Meditation: I meditate every day, in multiple forms. Many people around me don’t even know when I am doing it. Micro-meditation moments are fundamental […] I enjoy being alone. I can become easily overstimulated if I don’t allow myself moments of silence. Even though I am not consciously sitting down to meditate in an official capacity, the practice of being alone is meditative for me.
- Routine: I wake up at the same time every day no matter what I have planned; I find quiet time to spend with myself. I focus on removing pressure from time constraints that we have in this physical existence.
What are a few insights you’ve gotten into life after death? What misconceptions are there about this distinction?
The experience of life and death is a cycle. We could even say, “What are my insights on death after life?” Death implies a perceived “end” to something however that is just our physical connection to what that process looks like in this layer of vibration, in this experience […] The connections we make with loved ones in this physical world transcend space and time, always together and always tethered to one another. […] The problem is that most people don’t understand how much what they feel inside is what they should listen to; they are always looking for an external solution to an internal feeling for validation […] What I do can be incredibly ego based from both sides. Some mediums see themselves as better than or are looking for approval of accuracy during a session. And the same goes for the client, constantly looking for clear signs from a loved one and accuracy down to me ‘guessing’ what they might have in their pocket, and that’s not how it works, that’s not how life works. Spirit communicates through feelings first; how can we put a feeling in a box and say what a feeling is, in black and white, when there are so many layers, perceptions and time to a feeling becoming what it is?
Is there any guidance you’d like to share with VITA’s readership?
If you feel you are seeking answers about life, the world, and your place in it all, ask yourself: Why? Spirit has shown me that the answers you seek outside of yourself are only a reflection of an internal need. […] Whatever you are feeling at that moment in time will reflect in your reading so, be kind to yourself about your needs and how they make you feel.
