Faux freckles are a fun way to add some playfulness to your complexion. However, if they’re not done properly, it will look more like Halloween makeup than having naturally cute specks. Because of this popular trend, there are certain products designed specifically to add a few freckles to your face. They are shaded to match various skin tones and are applied with wands made particularly for faux freckles. And, when all else fails, you can use a brown shade of liquid or gel eyeliner too. There are certain tips you should keep in mind when applying fake little freckles so that they look like they’ve always been there. Make sure you do the following! —Jennifer Cox
Experiment first. Don’t attempt to create freckles for the first time on the night of a big event. Sit in front of the mirror and see where your tiny dots are most ideally suited.
Choose areas of the face that the sun would hit. Freckles should be concentrated on cheekbones, the nose, and the forehead.
Prep your skin. Your makeup should be finished before adding freckles as a final step. Otherwise, things like concealer, foundation, or blush could ruin them.
Go smaller than larger with individual spots. Freckles are quite tiny and faint, so in order to make them look genuine, you want to use littler dots rather than more noticeable, larger ones.
Blend. One of the biggest mistakes people make when doing faux freckles is forgetting to blend them in after applying them. Place them on and then tap them gently so they meld into your complexion.
Don’t go overboard. No one will believe faux freckles that are splattered across your entire face. Be subtle and discrete in the way in which you add them. Less is more.
Set them. Once you’ve done all your makeup and have natural-looking faux freckles in place, use a light powder to set them. Lock in those spots all day so they don’t fade or diminish because of sweat and smudging.
