1990s Trends I Love: Metallic Eyeshadow

September 20, 2023

Because of my blue-green eyes, I leaned towards these metallic shades when I was in high school in the 1990s. I loved using a silvery powder blue when my eyes were more sapphire (like my birthstone), and an olive shimmery shadow when they were more green. I loved how the reflective effects of these eyeshadows could make a regular “cut-off jean shorts and a grungy crop top” kind of day feel a little more glitzy. Well, my fellow ’90s lovers, metallic eyeshadows are back, and they couldn’t be more “in.” Available in an endless array of hues, they are sparkly, shiny, and super glamorous. Here are a few new ones you’ll fall in love with all over again. —Jennifer Cox

The Colorfix Metallics/Creams in Ballerina from Danessa Myricks ($20) is an award-winning, multipurpose, long-wearing, waterproof cream pigment that can be used as an eyeshadow. It has full coverage pigment with a distinctly pearly luster and is perfect for adding a subtle sheen to eyes. It has six versatile finishes and can be used alone, layered, or mixed.

Lancome’s Hypnôse Eyeshadow Palette ($54) has five flattering shades to easily create natural to dramatic eye makeup looks. There are 10 different eyeshadow palettes in this collection to offer an infinite choice of effects. Its reinvented formula offers an extremely soft and creamy texture for effortless application, and these weightless and velvety eyeshadow powders are easily blendable too. These daring metallics will last as long as 12 hours.

For some neutral shimmer, try Kulfi’s Zari Eyes Long-Lasting Crease-Proof Cream Eyeshadow in Bronze Brocade, Auburn Aura, or Sitara Sparkles ($41, available at Sephora Canada). This highly pigmented and cream-to-powder eyeshadow has a crease-proof formula that won’t budge all day long. It’s also formulated with some key ingredients like vitamin E, chamomile, and aloe vera so that it soothes, moisturizes, and nourishes the skin.

The Eyes To Memorise Pillow Talk eyeshadow from Charlotte Tilbury ($43, available at Holt Renfrew) is a long-lasting cream eyeshadow that features an easy, non-creasing formula. This water-infused shadow is enriched with soothing vitamin E and has a liquid-cream texture that is effortless to apply without skipping or dragging. The soft-focus pigments blur lines and imperfections for a visibly youthful finish.

MAC Cosmetics’ Dazzleshadow Extreme ($14) has a molten metallic finish like no other. Available in nine unique shades, it features one-swipe saturation along with 12 hours of staying power. The best part is, it fits into a Pro Palette compact for easy transport, so you can relive this 90s trend just about anywhere.
