Winter may seem endless but there are plenty of places to generate heat and invoke a bit of romance. Herewith, four ways to express those three little words in our favourite city:
With its pretty views of skyscrapers and passing ferries, the Natrel Rink is one of this town’s most scenic skating rinks. Skates are available for rent and nearby fire-pits are perfect for warming tootsies between laps. 235 Queens Quay W., Toronto, 416-973-4000, www.harbourfrontcentre.com
After some cool turns on the ice, warm things up at SOMA in the Distillery District. This charming chocolatemaker creates small batch goodies created with fair-trade cacao beans. The Mayan hot chocolate spiced with ginger, Madagascar vanilla and chili will probably get you to first base. 32 Tank House Lane, Distillery District, 416-815-7662, www.somachocolate.com
The oyster as aphrodisiac might be up for debate but taking your date to The Chase will undoubtedly crank up the heat. Perfect for those who like their entrances dark and discreet, a cobbled alleyway leads to an almost-hidden door. If the roasted chicken with foie gras, Armagnac and brioche don’t do the trick, the flourless chocolate cake will certainly seal the deal. 10 Temperance Street, (647) 348-7000, www.thechasetoronto.com
Set in a restored 1850’s chocolate factory, the Ivy at Verity has only four rooms so service is impeccable. Each one boasts uber-comfortable Hästens beds, private terraces and over-sized bathtubs (perfect for soaking à deux). Best of all, the 24-hour concierge makes sure the marble topped “Honour Bar” is fully stocked and delivers breakfast on a tray. 111d Queen St. East, (416) 368.6006 ext. 300, www.theivyatverity.ca
