To celebrate World Dream Day (annually on September 25), we’re intro’ing you to a gorgeous brand that can make your dreams of a good night’s sleep come true. Born in Los Angeles in 2023, Clementine Sleepwear blends the best of luxury and organic into one beautiful experience to elevate your sleep routine. Every collection is designed, tested and perfected in L.A. using the highest-grade certified organic silk, so that by the time it reaches your bed, Clementine Sleepwear has made sure it’ll last night after night for anti-aging skin health and hair repair. We chatted with brand founder Anna Cinquina to learn more. —Vita Daily
Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
My husband and I grew up on the beaches of Australia. We started a creative agency and soon afterwards, John began launching and investing into companies. We moved to New York City with a newborn, and the pace of the city combined with being new parents pushed us to research how to live healthier lives. This began an extensive health journey to get our bodies, minds, and energies right. Today, we’re based in Los Angeles and continue to be passionate about learning from medical experts on health protocols. Along the way, we’ve learned how important sleep is for healing and performance, and Clementine Sleepwear was born out of our passion for organic products and health-conscious fabrics without compromising on luxury and quality.
When and why did you launch Clementine Sleepwear? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
I was looking for organic silk sleepwear for myself. I’d made the decision to choose organic products for my family where possible and couldn’t find quite what I was looking for. So John and I began searching the world looking for it. We sourced our own fabric and started making the products that I needed, including pillowcases, sleep masks, pajamas and robes. Soon after, friends were asking us to make it for them and before long, Clementine Sleepwear was born. Clementine Sleepwear is all about bringing the world of organic health and luxury living together. We believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise on style and quality by choosing a health-conscious lifestyle. Every product that we design and test here in Los Angeles is about helping our community invest into better night routines and great sleeps. And after having my son, I truly learned about sleep deprivation! I realized that a great night routine led to better sleep quality, which gave me more energy for the next day. Our brand mission is to support better night routines, healthier bedroom biomes and energy-injecting sleeps with great products that have lower toxic loads.
What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?
Clementine’s first 100% organic mulberry silk collection contains a pajama set, hair bonnets, sleep masks, XL hair scrunchies and pillowcases. They’re designed with the highest quality fabrics we can source, double lined and built to last. Each item in the collection has something unique within the design. Our pajama sets are 100% organic mulberry silk detailed with mother of pearl buttons. We designed an innovative hidden adjustable silk strap in our hair bonnets to make them truly one-size-fits-all. After testing our sleep masks early on, our testers told us they wanted more coverage, so we’ve made them 20% larger than most other brands on the market and changed the shape to contour the face better. Last but not least, our scrunchies are 5x bigger than standard scrunchies – they’ve been so popular because it’s difficult to find stylish extra large scrunchies in pure silk. For our next collection, we are working on a long sleeve pajama set, silk robes, lingerie and a day to night convertible dress that can be worn out for dinner and straight to bed, giving “day to night” a whole new meaning.
What are the benefits of silk, and how can it contribute to a “healthier” sleep?
To anyone that has ever tried silk, it’s hard to go back. It’s one of the most incredible fabrics to sleep in, and there’s multiple health benefits which is why dermatologists recommend it – this is what led me to choose silk for myself and my family. Even my 6-year-old sleeps on a silk pillowcase! If you’re looking for better skin and hair health, silk is a game changer for sleeping. If you can choose products that work hard for you throughout the night, you wake up with the benefits. While most fabrics dehydrate the skin and cause friction, silk hydrates the skin and hair, and has sericin which restores hair follicles and skin health. Because it causes less friction, silk also helps reduce rashes, reactions, creases and wrinkles. I noticed the difference in my skin and hair within the first couple of days when I made the switch to silk. However, one thing I learned early on in my research is that not all silk is the same. There are various grades to quality and density, and many brands either blend their silk with plastics or treat it with chemical washes. Because the fabric spends so much time in contact with your skin and hair, it was important that we found organic non-treated silk when creating Clementine’s products. An additional fun upside is that organic silk has noticeably more shine and feels much softer on the skin.
Tell us about your brand mantra, “Own the Night.”
Whenever we dream up a new product or start sketching something for the next Clementine Sleepwear collection, I always ask the question, “How does this help a customer own their night?” It’s our north star. If we can all do a better job at owning our nights with better self-care and rituals that lead to improved sleep, it sets up our days to go out and rule the world, in whatever way is meaningful to us. Owning the night is about taking back control of our evenings and making decisions that support better health. I’m still on the journey (does it ever stop?!) but for me, when I improved my night routine, my mornings improved. It was the key that unlocked more energy and vitality in my life. Owning the night is about helping our community unlock that for their lives too.
What does each of your going-to-bed/sleep rituals look like, especially when it comes to setting yourselves up for a holistic and healthy sleep?
It’s taken trial and error, and research—and we’re always trying to improve it—but currently, here’s what works for us. Firstly, we set our room up to be as healthy and clutter free as possible. From our pajamas to bedding, air filters, mattresses and nightstands, we’ve chosen products which are organic and/or tested to be free of chemicals, VOCs, toxins, etc. We didn’t do everything at once – it started with small decisions for us i.e. switching our bedding and pajamas to organic fabrics, and buying the right air filter to improve our sleep quality. Secondly, I take a magnesium bath while drinking an organic herbal tea and listening to an audio book. Magnesium soaks soothe dry skin and reduce body stress by relaxing the muscles. After, I shower, do my skincare & oral health routine, and go off screens completely. We used to have blue light blocking glasses which we wore after 7pm but honestly, it’s just easier for us to go off screens. John is quite different. He jumps into a hyperbaric chamber or infrared sauna a few nights a week—both items we’ve invested in to have in our home—followed by his oral health and peptide skincare routine. Then, he does some reading to calm his mind while using an HRV therapy device and/or Apollo Neuro wrist band to calm the nervous system before sleep. Lastly, we both take vitamins and oral sprays which relax our nervous system and prepare our body for deeper sleeps. We know our routine might be strange and quite lengthy to some! But I believe it’s about finding what works for you and being intentional. Sleep is so important. It’s important to find a ritual (or rituals) that you lock into so your body knows to prepare itself for sleep. We don’t always get it perfect—but adding intention to this area of our lives has helped us wake up with more energy and has become a fun thing to work on. And for me, it’s turned into a form of self-love and self-care.
